Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Hmmm.... Seemed to work when I made mash in the past.... There are other yeasts that will find the mash eventually through the air but still yeasts right?

What does the mother have that brewers yeast doesn't?

From my understanding brewers yeast does ferment the sugars in the grains etc they use to make beer why wouldn't the same yeasts ferment the grains used to make mash?

According to this brewers yeast is actually used to ferment: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/101/yeast

Since grains contain fermentable sugars, seems like it would work.

just a note... the link you provided is from BEERadvocate. We're not trying to make alcohol. This argument went on for DAYS a week or so ago. If you want all the particulars, go back a few pages. Not trying to be snippy but I guess I'm just too direct this morning.

**sighs** I blame it on trying to listen to Michael Dell ramble on and hoping he actually had something worthwhile to say. Thank you for correcting my ambiguous statement

And, yes, grains are ideal for fermentation as many "natural brewers" know. I enjoy fermenting straight from the grain.

There are many, many types of yeast. And, several types of "brewer's yeast" depending on the type of fermentation desired.

Hey folks always seems like I am getting myself caught in the wringer here. This thread is so huge I don't have the time to dig around. I started my mash with ACV with mother just like was suggested. Sorry folks..................

Adding the vinegar for those of us who do yeast fermentation converts the ethanol into vinegar, if we ever actually reach that stage of fermentation. It takes at least 72 hours to get any registerable alcohol by volume readings without ACV. Even then, the readings are less than significant. I posted all about this, before, in the posts you are referencing, actually.

Addled I may have been when I made my statement about Brewer's Yeast....but, I'm not on a conference call right now, and I can say that what I'm saying is not only accurate - I posted the numbers and graphs to prove it.

Yeast fermentation is yeast fermentation. The difference between brewing beer and fermenting feed is time, racking and a couple of other small steps. We are doing an initial fermentation that could be taken all the way to second stage - several studies actually use the second stage fermentation and believe that the improvements they see there are more from going to the second stage than from any additives they were using.

This thread started out based on yeast fermentation....not LABs. LABs are great - and they combine wonderfully with yeast fermentation. Many fermentations combine the two (I combine the two)...one or the other or both are perfectly acceptable. There is no reason to be solely one or the other, except for personal preference.

So, please, y'all - stop worrying about alcohol in fermented feed. It's a non-issue.

You have no reason to apologize. I actually said thank you to you...so, I'm not sure why you are apologizing? I enjoyed your post and appreciated the correction.......**scratches head** what's going on? Someone PM you off thread and get nasty or something?

No. Just seems that every time I make a post i get corrected and often leave wondering why i got corrected. You are also on the dorking breeders thread which is the thread I frequent the most, or used to anyway. Same thing over there.....

Feeling quite apprehensive these days........

Sometimes i wish i would have never used GreenHorn as my handle here. I was quite green when i became a new member in 09 but we have come a long way since then.......

Yes, I recognized your name when I saw you post

I'm enjoying reading about your Blacks.

No need to feel apprehensive. We get a little passionate on this thread; but, I think we all respect each other's positions for the most part. Not always agreeing with each other by any means; but, we respect each other's positions.

And, I - again - am thankful you caught my goof. That could have snowballed into a complete mess. I think I'm going to go back and edit it to avoid confusion should someone read through in the future.

I haven't been on the thread in a while but did see someone asked about how people mix their feed for ferment. I recently changed my feed for fermenting because i got a really good deal on some feed.

I used
100lbs Nutrena Poultry Feed ($40)
100lbs crimped oats ($5 for BOTH bags)
50lbs of wet cobb ($15)

I hand mixed it to distribute everything fairly evenly and it filled my 55gal feed drum. It's WAY easier to drain and the birds really like it. The chicks like to pick around the oats but there's a few that really love them, especially the hen-raised babies. The little goose is getting used to eating the wet food(FF) as well but still ends up eating more free ranging... he's healthy & fat so I'm not complaining! Egg prodiction has gotten better since the new mix too and my pullets FINALLY started laying.

Glad to hear that's working for you.

I'd use that in a heartbeat; but, I have a personal objection to significant amounts of soy in a diet. I also require my foods to guarantee me they are GMO-free. My husband rolls his eyes at me.

Where did you manage to get the crimped oats for such a great price?

I have managed to get my own mix down under what a bag of the feed at the store was running me, so I'm happy with that; but, your mix looks a lot easier and more pocket friendly

Still trying to find a bloody mill that can get in my ingredients so I can cut the price further. But, so far, no such luck.

I ferment starter, Red Yeast Rice Bran and rolled barley for the chicks. The adults get fermented scratch, corn and rolled barley with the Rice bran top dressed. They have layer pellets free choice but I stopped fermenting the pellets when two 5 gal buckets didn't cover it. I couldn't see how I could possibly mix the barrel. I can do the whole arm thing, it doesn't bother my skin, I just wash up when Im done. I have a half barrel that I may try throwing everything into, I just cant see how I would drain all that feed, but if its not sloppy, how am I going to stir it ?
