Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I totally agree with you. Too many people would rather rely on chemicals and over-complicated remedies for their birds rather than the simpler things like maintaining their immune systems. Recently I have switched my whole flock of ducks and chickens over to fermented feed, thanks to you, and the information in this thread.

Also, I don't know if you ever decided to write a book or if it was just a random idea, but you should.

Amen! So glad you could use the info and so glad to have you here! About the book...if I ever do write it, people will either love it or they will hate it because I'm going to tell it like it is. Take it or leave it!

Update on the soup roosters. They are cleaning up their FF and seem to like their cleaner digs~they are smelling and looking cleaner already! I got shavings today to start a deep litter under the sheltered end and will also rake some leaves up and throw in there so they aren't stepping on wet, trampled, poopy ground all the time. As you can imagine, confining birds to a pen/run is not in my wheelhouse and I'm finding it very difficult to watch the pacing, the boredom, the lack of any true chicken behavior. I'll be very surprised if I keep them confined like this for 2 whole weeks....my heart may just not be able to take it, seriously.

Unfortunately little Silkie roo has taken a wrong turn into Deliverance territory and is the guy to pick on, so he spends a lot of time up on the roost. But, I noticed they were all on the roost tonight as opposed to the first night when the two youngest roos were on the ground. No silkies are being harmed in the making of this film...he's just getting his furry little head pecked now and again when he's walking along being a sissy.

So, if I'm going to continue to collect soup birds, I'm going to start building a deep litter in this little temporary holding area. I'm also going to place a low tub full of dusting materials so they can finally dust...these poor birds had no dry soil in which to dust and none that wasn't deeply contaminated with feces.

LOL.... BTW thanks for the welcome to the neighborhood...  My this is a fast moving chatty thread....  Me Likey.  I usually gloss through and answer posts that interest me or I have a question over and forgot completely to thank everyone for the welcome.

deb "who is doing a complete run though right now."

Oh yeah, we have lots of fun here. There are lots of good people that hang out in this neighborhood. :) We talk about anything and everything then end up back to fermented feed along the way. The best thing is that some folks with a lot of experience are usually around to answer questions. Glad to have you here!

@RoseMarie, Galanie, Perchie Girl... I sure can identify with what y'all are talking about. I have trouble with cholesterol, blood pressure (because of fluid) and aches and pains and I definitely need to lose a chunk of weight. The weight has never bothered me until now. This year my hips and knees are giving me fits. I really seriously need to get on a weight loss plan that I can do and lose some.

Poor little silkie. :( But I know he will be okay in a day or two... when you have him in the house chillin with you eating popcorn and watching movies from your recliner. LOL What color is he?

Yer such a hoot!!!

He is black with a little brown on the wings. I don't have a single diaper that goes with his coloring and that's why he's still up there and not already in the house, kicked back by the fire and livin' large. I'm sewing one right now~with matching manbag...er..roobag ~that will set off his lovely eyes and express his personality. I'm thinking a red silk...not candy apple red but more of a subtle garnet. I've already painted his nails that color and we both agreed it was just right for the festive fall season.

Ohhh I bet those nails are sharpe... as in perdy. LOL That garnet will really pop with his hair color. You must show pictures! Do they make a harness and leash for silkies? You need to take him out and show him off! hahaha
