I got another egg! It's NOT the Aussies laying it was a RIR I saw her coming out of the nest!!
That sounds about right..a RIR usually gets to going before an Aussie on the laying, but the Aussie will beat her out on the other end of the laying life.

YAY! Now you can have an omelet....

What do y'all think about Red Rangers as far as Meat Birds and do they Breed true? I have found some for $2 each and they are at a hatchery I can go pick them up at.

Bee, lots of people say the same....if only... I have insulation it's called lots of long johns and layering.I've never in my life been able to gain weight, only when I lost it for one reason or another.

Don't they say you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet... just saying.

Walt

Cheap meat birds were caught up tonight, trussed and are lying in the deep litter of the coop, along with two of my own hens. And guess who screamed and cut a fuss and was still screaming about it all long after? Yep..Mr. Silkie Pants.

No one else made more than one tiny squawk of surprise...he screamed like something was eating him alive and kept doing it long after. I'll have every predator within miles circling my meadow tonight.

You tied them up and left them on the floor? I suppose there is a reason? Like not wanting to try and catch them in the morning?

Yep..that's the reason. They rest easy all night, no stress of being chased the next day, plucked off the roost easy and calm in the dark. Well...usually calm. The silkie shreeker is an exception...

for some reason I thought the RIR would be later laying at 6 months old because they have JUST turned 5 months. That's WHY I was thinking it was the Aussie because I thought they laid as early as 19 weeks and on.

I noticed they had each gained some weight during their time on FF, even Mr. Silkie Pants, which was a surprise. He definitely weighs more than when he arrived.

yeah, so glad they have gained weight. Can't wait to hear about what their organs looked like since you cleaned em up some. Silkie Pants reminds me of my BA's when they were younger. IF I had to catch one for some reason you would SWEAR I was killing the thing and it would wiggle so you couldn't hardly hold the thing. I'd get soooo annoyed at them.
Man I sure hope the noise don't draw any critters to ya! Good luck tomorrow!

Unless it comes from a heritage line breeder, the RIR will be earlier maturing and will burn out earlier as well, so your Aussies will still be laying when your RIRs are going into retirement. They are considered a production type bird, whereas if you get them from stock bred to their original traits, they lay less than a hatchery strain and they will mature later as well.
