Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

@Bee... Now I don't want to hear any I told you so but... I think I need a shep. LOL I love feta cheese and the real stuff is made from sheep milk. Whoda thunk it! Now what breed of sheep would they use for milking? Well ...I want the shep milk, not the shep. lol Have you ever made feta from your sheep's milk? Love that stuff!

How about a little Romano to grate over that chicken parmesan you make??

Yep, shep milk and cheese is supposed to be real good...some of the best cheese in the world is made from shep, from all accounts. East Friesian is the most common here in the states but there are a few other breeds used primarily for dairy. I really like how milky the Katahdins are and was wanting to breed for dairy characteristics in a herd of Kats to get the milkiest ewes possible. I really wanted a little dairy use along with the lack of wool, as well as the hardiness and twinning capabilities of the Katahdins. I even built little, shep-sized stanchions that came in handy for working on the sheep, but I never really got around the milking of them before letting them go and moving from that place.

Here's a pic of an Icelandic dairy ewe...they are more hardy than the East Friesians and have better, stronger lambs, as well as excellent wool. Not the prettiest ewe, but look at her udder!!! If I had to choose a dairy breed, I'd choose this breed. The second pic of a ewe is the prettiest....

Take a look at these fantastic rams!

And the babies!!! Now, doesn't this one melt yer heart?

Do rams smell bad like billy goats??

Nope! Though the woolly breeds of sheep have more odor than the hair breeds due to the large amounts of lanolin in their wool. But NOTHING like a billy goat in any way, shape or form. The hair breed rams smell much like horses or other barnyard animals of that ilk..just smell like hay, grass, warm skin, fur.

Well, I know billy goats do also sorts of disgusting things to smell good for the ladies, but it is absolutely horrible!!

@Bee... that Icelandic dairy ewe makes me hurt to look at her! Dang! lol Have you ever made cheese? I haven't but I'm going to. Feta and mozerella are on my list of things to do...make. I love cheese!

Billy goats can be pretty gross but I don't think goats in general stink. I kinda like the way they smell. lol Sure wish I had a couple in the freezer.

thank goodness she made it! UGHHHH that dog! IF he gets another one I think I'd smear it all over his face and head to see IF that would make him not do it again. ????
I'll tell you what I did ages ago with a dog that loved to kill my birds... if you promise not to tell anybody!

I had always heard that to break a dog from killing chickens, you take one of the birds he killed and tie it around his neck as tight as you can and let it stay there and rot. Well, the dog we had at the time killed about half of my chickens in one afternoon. So I was plenty mad at him. Then I think it was about a week after that when he got hold of another one. I tied that chicken to his neck and after about an hour I look out the window and there he is in the yard eating that chicken. He got it off his neck somehow!

This is the part that worked:

I was so mad, I marched right out there (he saw me coming but apparently didn't care much about what I thought) and he stood there as I walked up to him, grabbed his collar to hold him and then picked up that big rooster by his feet. Can you guess what happened next? Yep! I beat that dog for about 10 minutes with that big rooster!

He never ever looked straight at a chicken again for the rest of his life! He would glance at them sideways and put his head down!
