Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Oh, this thread is AMAZING!!! I've learned so much and I'm definitely going to give the fermented feed a try, and I'm super excited about it

Thanks so much for this thread, I love learning more about chickens and ways to keep them happy and healthy!

Anyone who has been learning on the OT thread this year, we are celebrating the first birthday of the thread by showing some love to all the OTs who contribute there....could you all go over there and give a big ol' shout out to Fred, Walt, Al and the gang for all the free advice they dish out to us all?

I have a question--I have been feeding FF to my birds for 4 weeks, and need to buy some more layer pellets. A feed I am considering has some meat byproducts added to the grain--can I use this in my FF mix of layer pellets and whole grains? Will the meat byproducts cause it to go bad?

I found the unpasteurized ACV with Mother included at walmart...I really didn't think I was going to find it there...but I did. It was staring me in the face with it's cloudy golden bottle the whole time.

I bought 2 contractor buckets and drilled holes all throughout the one....added my feed, ACV and water. It's currently doing it's thing in the dark corner of the coop.

I'm really excited! I can't wait for it to be ready so they can try it out!

Oh, and this may be a dumb question, but can I add the Oyster shell to the batch, or do I have to add that at the end before I dish it out? It would be more convenient to just add everything at once, but I don't want to mess up my batch!

Thank you!

If you are using a laying ration, you won't need the oyster shell at all...but you won't need it added to the feed either. If you have OS and want to use it, just keep some free choice handy.

I would like to add some whole grains to the ff I am making for my flock, Back in the summer early fall I was able to buy wheat to add but now my feed store doesn't carry it, I was able to get whole oats but other than the Flock raiser and whole oats and scratch there isn't much available right now, what are some of the other grains that can be added? I looked at wild bird food but it really didn't look all that great and wasn't sure if that was a viable addition or not, then looked at game bird feed but at 30% protein I really wasn't sure if that would be the right choice. Or maybe I should just use what I have. Would appreciate any advise or suggestions.. Thanks today my flock ate the ff only and other than my gander who sulked and mostly ate hay they all seemed to like it. I think he'll come around but he isn't much for change so it will take him awhile.
