Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Yep...they are getting fuller on less feed and my chickens always cut back at this time of the year naturally. May have something to do with keeping warm...when all blood supplies are directed towards digestion efforts, the extremeties go lacking. Solution? Eat less, move around less. What we always call "cooping up".
I thought we are supposed to move around more when we're cold? That's what my mom always told me.

Probably just her trying to get me from touching the thermostat.

I notice more huddling and snuggling this time of year.

Yep...when in doubt, look at the animals. They have short bursts of activity, then they huddle. When it's warm you won't see so much of the huddling.

Even my roost hog head hen lets the teenagers snuggle her now-a-days.

I just love watching this old hen with her clan. She has a rooster (Jagger) she loves. She was wiping her beak on his back last night at bed time.

Still lots of moving around during the day, though not as much of them going outside. Gigi the houdan continues to travel to the neighbour's yard every day, even in the snow! What do they have that I don't?

Peace and quiet? Isolation? She laying her eggs there, maybe? Usually when a hen wants to go off by themselves they are not in the social structure or they are looking for a quiet place to be.
It's a rooster.

Sometimes he brings a couple girls. I think he likes that over there he IS the king rooster. Over here he is not. He's been doing it since August. My neighbour loves the punk. He even named him after his cousin.

The one I couldn't figure out how it got killed? No that wasn't Jagger. It was his son though.

I'd be pretty upset if Jagger got killed. He's pretty special to us here. He's still young, so he should have some time left in him yet.

What a tough week! Seems like so much has been happening to so many flocks. I'm sorry Aoxa. And glad Jagger is okay.-L

That was quite a while ago. 4 weeks to be exact. Same day a friend of mine lost quite a few. I was lucky in comparison. I had a close call a few days later with a Goshawk.Nothing at all since. It's tough not knowing. Whatever happened to the first boy, his neck was broken- - so I suspect some kind of animal attack.

Thanks for your well wishes Mountain Momma!
