Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

What I do is make sure I scrape down the feed on the sides every time. Haven't had mold yet. Been going for quite some time, and haven't added new feed in a week or so.
Thanks, I'll have to get a spatula for the tub, right now I'm using a wooden spoon.

I went out with a towel and removed all of the mold. I'm hoping it'll stop growing with the spatula.

If it's only a tiny little bit, it's nothing worth throwing the feed out for.

A little mold won't kill them. I mean, mine scrounge around the compost piles all the time. I'm sure there's all kinds of nasties there.

Thanks so much Aoxa! It seems there is always something to worry about with these chickens.

It wasn't a whole lot, but it was noticeable. Glad I don't have toss all that feed! I just started a big batch too! lol

Glad I could help :)

My dog once ate an entire bundle of rotten asparagus and only threw up once. This asparagus was really, really bad. It was in the wet garbage, and she is a bad poodle who LOVVVES asparagus. It was moldy and nasty.

Bad dog..

See culprit here.. who had just ripped apart a garbage bag FULL of chick litter. To eat their poop. No she wasn't sick this time around. See the shaving stuck to her eye? LOL

They aren't necessarily over weight, but they should be in better shape for breeding. They are eating a lot of FF right now, and not any grass (snow is stuck solid to the ground and is icy), so I know it's just a matter of time before they do get to be over-weight.

and that's for standard toulouse. My girls are from the extreme form of exhibition toulouse. Their mothers are just massive.

Honestly though, what dewlap toulouse looks in-shape? That's why I like them. They are obese looking. It makes me giggle.
They are just so chubby but adorable, and I can see where they would have a problem mating. Honestly they look great too, you got them grass hay how are they liking it? My 2 eat on it mostly in the evenings before bed, but my chickens and ducks are eating it too. You have a challenging breed but from all I read your doing everything right, Hopefully they won't put on too much weight, before spring thaw and mating season starts, Looks like they can get as much exercise as they want too.

Aoxa & Bee you guys were right

Quote: Just an FYI for your knowledge. I have tried fermenting moldy feed and everything turned out just fine. I have scraped the sides down into the mix with some mold, not as much as yours though, and fed it just fine.

Not telling you to do it, just that it's been done and turned out OK.

Thanks. I assumed it would be fine, I just thought I'd make sure it won't kill the chickens or anything! Some of the mold got into the feed, I'm sure...but I scraped and wiped it off the sides with a towel...
