Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Just wanted to update how it is going with my FF. i have been feeding it for about three weeks now. I love it. I have enough chickens that I was going through a five gallon bucket every day. I started another bucket so my feed could at least set for twenty four hours.

I have been feeding my birds a whole seed grain diet for sometime. Never liked all the waste from processed food. I buy pigeon food quite often. My biggest problem I had was my birds did not seem to be eating the peas. That is the protein in this food. Since I started fermenting the food they eat it all. Feeding time is much different now. I feed twice a day. They all come running and go straight to business. It is almost silent after they are fed except for excited clucking.

Been experimenting with my feed. I have very little greens for my flock at the moment. I have been adding alfalfa cubes to their feed. I tried shredded cabbage also. They loved it. It is interesting because I fed some of the shredded cabbage fresh and they hardly touched it. Once it was added to the FF they devoured it. I tried adding garlic also. I just add a couple crushed cloves to the FF bucket. It smells like garlic and my birds are still devouring their feed.

Anyhow I am still excited about all this and I hope everyone keeps sharing their ideas.

I've been using FF for about 2+ months now. My niece came to visit and we were out in the coop and I was showing her the birds and I suddenly realized that the coop didn't smell - at ALL!

I asked her, just in case I had become accustomed to the smell, but she said she didn't smell anything either. I think, for that reason alone, I'll continue with the FF. I'm going to be interested to see if, in the spring, there's any reduction in flies in the coop.

Wish I could say I have no smell. There is still a smell. Not as bad, granted.. but still a smell. I'm not going to lie.

My chicks smell a bit less, and their food is much more fermented. However, they still smell.

I don't notice the smell in the outside coops but I think I'm immune these days. We have 6 chicks right now. 2 have been ff from the beginning. The other 4 have been on ff since Sunday afternoon. The smell is better, but not great. Two of the new chicks have pasty butt down from 3 when I got them. One has a protruding vent and I've been soaking it in epsom salt baths. It still never poops in the water.

It will be interesting to see how these chicks end up wrt the smell.
