Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Okay well I've been using the FF on my meat birds. I have to tell you, this is the grosses

nastiest, pooping critters I've ever had. I got them from TSC and will NEVER buy from there again. I have always bought my birds at Meyer and have never had any problems. These critters jump at you, bite you and act like you are straving them, which I'm not. I think they got a double dose of eat all the time gene. I can't wait for them to go to the butcher. Their poop on FF is more watery, then if I would give them dry. I have to clean out their area every day. It's gross and really stinks. My feed is on the drier side and I have seen it bubble. So I know the fermenting is happening. So why are they so gross

the ones I got from TSC the other year were total sweethearts. they never tried to attack me the way yours do.

Just curious.. but are you sure you're feeding them enough at each feeding? Mine would waddle over and stick their heads in the feed scoop as I was doling out the feed.. lol..never had one leap at me though!

Just wanted to pop in and say "thank heavens for FF & chicken aprons!!". 3 weeks ago my roo got plucked by a rescue dog we had. i checked under his saddle this afternoon and found all this, I can't believe how fast they're growing back!!

Gotta say, I'm with Yinepu, I'd also try a slightly wetter, longer ferment. I use FF, from starter to whole grains on all my chickens and they are always drier, almost smell free and as satisfied as everyone else. I started using FF mostly because I needed to start my chicks in the house and couldn't keep up with the smell. Now my daughter never even noticed the start of chick season. I can't imagine going back to the "old style" nasty, smelly, wet meaties;-(

Yesterday I put out some fermenting mash for the 1 weekers and wow. The attacked it like wild fire and almost finished a big serving of it. It was soupy and I had used the back wash from the bottom of an older batch, all that good white goop . They are growing quick and no poopy butt.

This morning was the first morning the FF trough was completely picked clean! Success! It was a slow transition but has worked well! I've kept the recipe pretty bland for now. The chicks are staggered in age from 4 to 6 weeks old. Their FF is currently unmedicated chick starter and grower, BOSS, cracked corn, and a hobby farm crumble high proteinsupplement my started was braggs ACV and dry activated yeast. When can I add spices like oregano? I also want to add some flax and possibly something cheaper for protein supplement. Thanks! Wish they would wear little bibbys when they are eating!
