Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

400

Here is a stand I made today and the pan is a drywall mud pan. Another BYCer gave me the idea. It's high enough that no litter will get thrown in. I bought 2 pans so I can fill one & take it out in the morning and bring the one from the day before in to be washed.

thanks, all! this is great info! And here I've been trying my best to keep the feed dry and fresh. I'm using Purina granules and they should make a great ff.
I'm eager to try this, thanks again.

Love your feeders, won't hubby be happy to know I've found yet another honey-do for him? ha!

Does anyone use the liquid from the fermenting process for either personal or animal use. Sandor writes about it in his book "The Art of Fermentation". Unfortunately he does not speak of the nutritional benefits of it. I was thinking of capturing the water from the soak and use it in the waterers. But if there is not a significant benefit they why do the extra work.

Since I'm using the hooch over and over and over again in my own fermentation, I've not drained it off for anything else. However, since I also do not fully drain my FF, my flock drinks the excess. There's nothing wrong with it at all. Many of the probiotics of the mother are found in the hooch, particularly after stirring the FF. By allowing them to drink the hooch, you are imparting more of it than you would with just the FF. I wouldn't want to use it all, though, since you need to be inoculating your next batch of FF with the hooch.

I'm talking yeast/wild yeast/ yeast + LAB FF, here. The pure LAB / LAB+IMO folks may have something else to say on the matter

I think I read on here somewhere but can't find it now. I'm using LAB to ferment grains and I was wondering if I could use COB/molasses. I know I have read that you shouldn't give chickens molasses but I figured that fermenting with the LAB that the molasses would basically just be food for the LAB. Anyone???

I'm not sure what COB is, but I've been mixing a 20% sweet feed into my FF for months now. It has some molasses in it, not sure how much though. I've also seen where others on here have used molasses, but I sure don't remember where either.

There was disscusion of that a long time ago on the thread, as I remember several used both COB and products w/ molasses w/o any problems. W/ molasses I would think it is all in the dosage, higher doses can cause diarrhea, as far as the ferment itself it would be great for the ferment it is what you stabalize LAB with so that it does not require refrigeration and lasts at room temps for a year or more.

whoa, fermented feed meltdown...
everything was going swimmingly, had the wheat seed fermenting with wild yeast for several months, all good, smelled good, then I added some organic layer to the bucket and the very next day it smelled NASTY and spoiled...
what the heck?
