Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Both sites are using this as a laxative, not as an antihelmintic...never in my life have I thought a chicken might need a laxative.

On the contrary, I think it would be more likely they would need something to stopper them up! I've not seen any loose stool with the use of the castor oil, so I'm thinking the amount given didn't have the laxative effect they are hoping. Normal poops as per usual in this coop!

i know i saw it somewhere . mine either nobody has the runs in my place either. i keep looking. good reads though.

Do you know if this also works on coccidia? I'm trying to find natural coccidia remedies and I just can't. I'm going to be feeding my chicks some crushed cloves as a preventive measure for building up immunity, I read somewhere that it helps, but a natural treatment would be nice. I give them DE in their food already and ACV in the water.

I have 14 Cornish rocks for meat birds that are about 2 weeks old. I just noticed their bottoms are very swollen and purple. They looked abscessed. But they are all like that. We have had a ton of rain lately could it be from the wet ground? It looks terrible. I've raised two other flocks and do not recall either looking like this.

Could you post a pic? All my CX looked like they had swollen bums at that age, so I'm not sure if what you are seeing are just CX or something different.

I raised a few of the cornish rocks this year and they all had that same looking rear end but everyone was fine and ended up dressing out nicely ! They're now in the freezer and ready for the BBQ . I think you'll find that what you're seeing is fairly normal for that breed.

So funny, sweet Rosemarie! Y'all would have gotten to the same place, just a more circuitous route, I'm thinking. You are all wise in chickens and getting more wise with every passing day, from what I'm reading. I love to see this whole chicken thing grow and grow. You know I couldn't find one thing about FF here in the states when I went Googling 2 years ago? Now do a search! All I could find back then was some foreign studies done for commercial purposes...and those were enough to get me into fermenting. Now I do a search and there are blogs by folks who you'd think invented the process, they are so sure in their knowledge of it!

Same thing happened with ACV. Some years back just a few of us on BYC were using it and mostly we got scoffed at...now you can't throw a stick without hitting someone who is using ACV in the water.

This new age brings some speedy transitions in information and soon you all will run circles around this old gal..already are! I'm content in this old rocking chair, with my old birds, and both of us winding down into leaving this place. Yesirreee!

me to on ready to be with our Father but while I am down here I wanna learn from those who know what they are doing like you. So you just sit in that there old rocker of yours but just BE SURE you don't forget me on here tryin' to learn from you.

Just like last night I was ready to medicate that chick because it scared me and I didn't want it to die or to lose others either. It's acting just as normal as it can be now. Have no clue why it was wheezing like that unless it had some chops stuck in it's throat. But I was all ready to go get the meds and start dr-ing. You said you give it 3 days and see, so I hope I can try that to. Oh and by the way, I am older than you are so listen to your elders and stay round here.

OH AND speaking of the BA that I thought was sick last night.... remember I told you I put a band on it's leg so I'd know which one it was? well it got it's band off today! UGHHH so now I don't know WHICH one it was. lol I have two of them that are good at getting them off!

You are such a hoot!! I so enjoy it! So, now you won't know which bird was sick...until she shows more symptoms and you notice her again? Three day rule unless it's an obvious wound or symptom caused by something obvious that can be rectified..or left alone to resolve itself. In this way a person can learn patience and also learn what is normal for chickens..which is just about anything, I've found. Chickens do some weird things that I've never gotten explanation for..all I know is it happened, it resolved itself and I never saw it again. And I did nothing but observe.

Such a treat to have someone who is eager to learn about chickens...makes all the difference in the world!

You're SO SWEET! Yep all I know it was a cockerel. lol I stood and listened for awhile tonight when I went to shut their back gate when they got on their roost. Never did hear anything. I have GOT to get their roost fixed though before I really start having some major problems. I FINALLY got all that salsa done today so maybe I can do something on the roost tomorrow. I sure hope so! I had a pair of RIR wanting to camp out in the run on a bread crate I fixed up out there for them to sit on. Had already moved those 2 twice now and put them in the roosting area before it got too dark a few nights ago but tonight it was after dark when I made it out there to shut their back gate and the two was perched on the bread crate going to roost on it. I was like oh no you don't! So I picked up each of them and took them to the roost and sit them on it. The run isn't as secure as the roosting area is. Anyway I hooked up the light (don't have power in the chicken pen except for extension cords) and went out here to shut their gate and found 3 of the BA's just walking around on the ground in there. ughhhh I took that top roost off yesterday because it was just sooooo hot close to that roof (tin) and they are just NOT liking their roost now. Going to see what I can come up with if nothing else just do a temp thing for tomorrow until I can build them one. I have all the stuff to make it with on hand already. I want to do like you said and build it on the same level both of the roost and do it about waist high I guess.
Hey I want to do what's best for my chickens to keep them for just as long as I possibly can and the way to do that is learn from precious folks like you and try to keep them healthy. Also praying that God keeps them safe. I do my part and He does His part.

Bee, you commented that you wouldn't know why a chicken would need a laxative. Wouldn't the castor oil help if the chicken is egg-bound? Ha! I am thinking the laxative would explode the egg out of the hen!!

Rosemarie, I love your writings. You and Bee brighten my day with your posts! I have the same problem with my '4 Musketeers' (12 wk. BR). We have a window that extends over the coop. This is where they want to roost at night. (It doesn't help that the older girls don't want them on the roost!) Every night my DH and I go out and remove them. So far they have outsmarted us (isn't that pathetic!). We put a makeshift fence up in front of the window and they still manage to get on that window. From the window they get onto the roof! UGH! Very important to have a TALL husband!

Well...the egg doesn't come from the bowels, so I'm not sure a laxative would help in that regard. I've never had egg bound hens, so I'm not sure what would work with them as it probably depends on WHY and WHERE they are egg bound in their oviduct.

Could work, who knows? There are some folks who swear by taking laxatives to start an overdue pregnancy, so one never knows!
