Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Well isn't that interesting. I haven't done any online searches on this problem but in the the book I have at home I have read that it is highly contagious. I don't know what to say. Just sharing what I have read. I had one bird many years ago that had it. You could smell him 100 feet away! I didn't know at the time that there was a cure or I would have done what I could to help him. Since they said it was so contagious, I did the only thing I could for the sake of the rest of the flock.

Is there anything that you can smell 100ft away that is not contagious??? I would think it was no matter what I read.

Take it from  a nurse..and a woman..candida albicans is indeed contagious.  :sick   Depends on just how much contact with the yeast organisms the potential host has whether it is transmitted from one creature to another and also the individual immune system health of the individual.

Yuck! A fly just landed on my screen as I was reading this post and I about freaked! Maybe I need some sleep! LOL

I only have local channels too but I have a neighbor with satellite who dvr's it and every weekend when we're done chores for that day we have a "family" dinner and the after dinner entertainment is watching them. Having filmed for an outdoor show I do purchase the seasons of the ones I like on DVD as they become available. Purchasing the individual shows pushes the direction that the industry takes in how the shows are filmed not quite as much as Nielson ratings but it gives them a direction as to what viewers want. Duck dynasty is The third show they film and I like it because it does focus on the family structure aspect more than either of their other two shows. I have filmed everything from sitting in a tree stand waiting on a deer to walk by to following a family small game hunting behind beagles and for me when the editor was done compiling the episodes, the ones where a family was out and the daughter got her first rabbit with a proud dad fawning over her were far more poignant than when I am perched above a guy holding out for that "perfect" buck. I digressed into all that just to point out I think the success of Duck Dynasty over their other two shows is not the lack of "hunting footage" to make it more popular it is the promotion of family. That is something that resonates with people, the feeling of belonging. The fact they are Christian praying before the meal is secondary. It is the fact they value the extended family unit. A Christian principle without doubt but it can be found in other cultures/religions also.

Yeah I'm sure there are different reasons that people like the show. My reason is that I can identify with them. I don't care so much about all the money they have made. I wouldn't ever want to live in one of those mansions or a subdivision. I don't want to see people or another house when I look out any of my windows. I identify with the hunting, the fishing, the cooking of the game, the doing crazy stuff just for the fun of it as well as the Christian values. And it is great to see a program on television where a Christian family can be a Christian family without being ridiculed for it. And it is amazing to see a big family bow their head and pray a prayer in the name of Jesus Christ week after week and stay on the air!

I heard that they tried to get them to stop praying at one point in time and they wouldn't go for it. Gossip, you know how it is, no way to tell if they were right. I like all their family and christian values, it's the only reason I watch the show. The hunting, fishing, cooking, and crazy stuff used to be family life. Nowadays, families don't even sit down together for fast food much less a meal. It's a shame we advance in science and tech yet fail on the things that are truly important.

I tried draining one that was pretty big... It was half air and half yellowish clear liquid. The poor girl looked relieved when I did it, I was afraid I was going to hurt her. I picked the farthest along with it, unfortunately it grew back rather quickly. I guess I expected it later but not so soon. Thank you all for your help.

I have seen a lot of those commercial meat birds with ascites. It is pretty dang nasty. That yellowish fluid is all inside them and really collects like a sac around their heart. I suppose that is what kills them. The carcass is also a darker sort of blue-ish/red-ish color. Maybe purple-ish is a better description. They end up with a lot of fluid inside them. I've seen some with well over 1/2 of a cup of excess fluid inside them, probably closer to a cup. And they seem to have quite a higher temperature than the healthy birds. I'm not sure what causes it. I wish I did know.

I agree. It seems like nothing is like it use to be. I guess that is why I like it so well, reminds me of the past.

Wonder if I would write to them and ask them to make this part of their tour and tell them why....it could happen!  :D   If I thought that it would make an impression, I'd sure write to them in a heartbeat!  All my son sees when he sees these guys is a way to make lots of money, look and act like a hick, sit around and have fun...the ideal lifestyle for any hillbilly guy.  Plus, they've got attractive wives.    To my son that is the life to be desired....I wish he'd rather just be a godly man as his first priority.

You never know. It would sure be worth a try. They have some kind of group here that sponsors/puts on faith based programs at the high school. I heard a couple thousand people attended when the DD people came. Any larger church or group ought to be able to get scheduled for an appearance. If I was going to see them for a Christian program I would hope to see the dad, Phil. I'd like to hear him speak. I believe he is the most grounded in his faith.

Bee the BA is still pulling feathers out of the others and eating them. They were out free ranging today and I caught him doing it again. He walks up to them toward the back of them, stands there looking and then grabs a beak full of the little fluffy feathers and eats them. I had them on that 23% protein since they were young and then started feeding them the layer food a couple weeks back I guess it was. But I had started cutting the protein in the starter since you said it was too high in half by adding the scratch 1/2 and 1/2 to cut the protein. I think I saw one of my RIR's do this to yesterday but never did see him eat any feathers. This one BA did this twice this evening in less than 15 minutes. When I gave them the boiled livers the other day I watched them for a couple days and never did see him do this again so I thought, oh ok their protein level is back up now..... but today I saw it twice in that short length of time. He just walks up to them in the back stands there for a second and grabs a wad. The cockerel he pulled them from today went after him. lol I'm afraid all of them will start this if I don't figure out what's going on.

They haven't had any food since yesterday evening and every time I had to walk out the door they came a runnin'. I was trying to clean their water and turn the poop under that's under the roost and they stayed around the pen wanting food but I wouldn't give it until this evening when it was time for them to go inside.
Anyway I am concerned about this feather eating because I don't want others to start in doing this. You should hear the chicks squak when he pulls them out.
