So Back to Silkies. Do some market research in your area. Here in San Diego I dont think there would be ANY problem marketing Black skinned boned birds. If there is an Asian market in your area go there and browse.... Asian markets are very interesting places.... But it would be a good place to price out what a dressed out bird would fetch.

I think I will be staying with my blue sumatra. I know it has to cost to import, but that much? They are beautiful though.

Greenfire brought in Creme Legbars and now look at how easy they are to come by.... there is a breeder here that keeps a flock of wild caught Sumatras and I am hoping to get some hatching eggs from him next year. These were birds that went feral here in the US.

Yes.... you know that whole door closing another opens deal. I cant obsess about the past only learn from it, and move on.

Oorah.... to your son. San Diego is a big military town.... Navy, Marines, Coast Gaurd, even some Airforce. Is He doing boot camp at Camp Pendledton? Right now I am sitting under the flight path for Miramar.... When the Marines took it over from the Navy we started getting to see some of the BIG aircraft... Harriers, C130's. and the ever present Heliocopters of all sizes. When a C130's go over it rattles the dishes.... LOL

In a past life I worked in Aerospace as a Draftsman and eventually a Tool Designer.... for the big stuff like the C17 and eventually for tools for jet engine repair. So I love those big flyin things.... LOL.

Yep, Lord willing, he will be in bootcamp by spring (budget cuts is delaying a lot of these men and women from getting into bootcamp). He will be at MCRD then on to Pendleton for Rifleman training. So proud of him! He was seriously born for this! So excited for him to be able to see MCRD this weekend! The DI's will be there to "encourage" them....

I hope y'all don't mind too much but I'm going to get my soapbox out just a minute. I am a FIRM believer that there are MANY MANY cures for sickness in the great outdoors right under our noses! They problem is, we usually see whatever plant as a weed and try our best to kill it! I have had all kinds of plants growing around me my whole life and thought they were JUST DANG WEEDS! Today I am looking at maypops or passion fruit. I have a spot that I haven't mowed this year because there are a bunch of rabbits out there that I plan on trapping this fall/winter to eat. Anyhow, maypops are growing like crazy in that thicket of a mess! You would think I planted them, fertilized and watered them! I never knew what these weeds were until last year. I was just reading some more about them and they actually are a "superfood". They also taste really good. The seeds are kind of hard but they do crunch up like a hard sunflower seed would. I bet the chickens would love them. And ohhh the flowers are sooo pretty!!!

They weren't truly all homemade as I ordered a base and just added some of my own ingredients, but they were all natural ingredients in the base, as well as those I added, and made in the kitchen, so I guess that qualifies as "home" made.    We made soaps, sugar and salt scrubs, bath salts and such and it was a fun time for me and my sisters.  The lip balms had shea butter, cocoa butter, Vit. E oil, ect., the usual kind of balms used to promote skin softness.  I'd add honey, vanilla, etc. so they tasted good if you accidentally licked your lips. 

Interesting and that does sound like fun. I love making stuff, canning, etc.

We all have a calling of some sort.... a job or life of work to do... I have seen the military do wonderful things for people especially when they thrive on discipline and team work.

Me I was one of the first female tool designers in San Diego back when women in engineering were unusual. Before personal computers.... Some of my drawings were fourteen feet long at 1:12 th scale, or one inch equals one foot. Worked on Two Drafting boards bolted together. I loved it. I still design now and then there is a link in my sig that says Coop Rebuild. My latest project.

I process when they start crowing or harassing my ladies.  I have been caponizing, and the nonslips (full capons) live much longer, minimum of 6 months.  The slips (non capons) I have been processing have been 3-5 lbs dressed, depending on how soon they started crowing.

Do you know how well naked necks do in a cold climate? I love your rooster, Jasum!

Preaching to the Choir here..... LOL.... My land is nothing but Pharmacopia.... Yucca, Yerba Santa, Mormon Tea, Sage, Ribbonwood, Greasewood, Chamise, Mesquite....

Mesquite pods look like pea pods or Bean pods. The Native Americans have ground them up for four for centuries.... Guess what.... studies are being conducted now on how this flour which is made from the whole seed pod grounded is being considered as useful for diabetics..... Mesquite Flour



Nope no weeding here.... Dont do grass either. But there is alot to eat for forraging poultry.... Nothing in my yard gets water from me. Oh and this is along the drive way the house is in the upper left hand corner not visible from the road.

I agree, pretty cool work history. You must be a brainiac. My place is in the flight path of some of the helicopters and some of those big carrier choppers. They are always headed one way or the other between SW/NE. I always run to the door and watch them fly over. I also wave at them many times. LOL Can they see me? Poor folks probably think, "Look at that freak! We ought to talk that place out!" LOL
