Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Yep...and maybe throw some NH in with that bunch. Everything you could ever want in a chicken can be found in those breeds and all four are hard working, beautiful, hardy and worthy of feed in my book. Out of all the flocks down through all the years, these breeds keep popping up as survivors, excellent layers, steady workers and meaty carcasses. I don't care about fancy and I don't care about unusual feather markings...all I care about, in the end, is who can put eggs and meat in my cupboard in the cheapest manner, are tough and hardy out on free range and look good in the doing of it. All those breeds have stood the test of time down through the years.

A poor little frog was found in the coop this morning...

Shoot, the pics won't post! The Buckeye roo was checking it out and a Lehorn pullet slipped up on him and snatched it and the race was on. They didn't eat it but they beat it unconscience. lol

You know? I saw one of my birds do the same thing! They didn't eat it..just walked by, it happened to hop in front of them and one of them grabbed it and thunked it on the ground until it was dead and they just walked on. Very unusual...they usually hoover up what they kill, so I'm wondering if frogs don't taste as good as lizards and snakes? Don't want to get frogenital warts?

Yep that's what counts!
(I like the looks of the NH too.)
The guy on "A Taste Of History" on PBS is making Coq Au Vin. I love that show. He cooks in cast iron over an open fire.

LOL That would be bad!!! hahaha

They just beat this thing up and left it half dead. When the Leghorn snatched it up it squealed real loud - made me feel a little bit sorry for it. :) While I was sitting in the run watching them and a red wasp landed on me. YIKES!!! When I knocked it off it was a gonner, they eat those up. On the other hand, a grand daddy long legs was crawling around and they just looked at it.

Grandaddies stink and they taste bad, from all accounts...never saw a bird that would eat one.

Here's an interesting little BEEP(Bee Tip..a little easier to remember than a BIP). In the course of canning up meats this weekend, I had large, wide bowels full of meat but no lids to place on them while they were in the fridge awaiting canning. I was looking around for those elastic plastic bowel covers we had bought once~expensive but really neato for family reunions~and found we were out of them. Then the Ol' Batness brought out some disposable processing caps that she uses when she perms her hair. Perfect! They fit the huge bowels I was using and were cheap enough to dispose of and hardy enough to wash, rinse and save if one wanted to do so.

Then a light bulb went on and I got to thinking about all those folks out there covering their FF with towels and such and thought...processing caps would fit neatly over a bucket and still allow airflow enough for gas to escape. Found them in packages of 100, extra large one size fits all, on Amazon for $7.62 and free shipping.

We'll be keeping a supply of those handy little boogers from now on...quite a few uses, quite a good price.

Quote: I say no to my children. Every time I stand in line at the grocery store!! lol Was a time I didn't take them with me just to avoid the tussle-- theydidn't have the internal gizmo to stop asking so I stopped bringing them with me until they did get that "no" was "no". I don't waffle either-- and I explain why, not " because I told you so". The kids have input and I value their opinions. We make decisions together except adult stuff. IF they want me to drive them to an event, then they need to help with the chores to free up my time. If they need a clean uniform for scouts, then get it washed. I do lend a hand with ironing: either with my supervision, or I do it if rushed. WHen we are rushed we all pitch in and divie out the must- do jobs before racing out the door.

It is not my job to give my kids everything. It is my job to give them a moral compass. ANd provide a safe secure home with adequate clothing and good food. IT is my job to help them learn to be self-sufficient. BOth my kids can cook, do dishes, laundry, feed the critters, clean a bird, and bury a bird. BOth my kids are well behaved at school. IF anything they fail to stick up for themselves at school, even to a teacher. THen I need to step in and help guide my kids. I try to teach them stuff is not everything-- having mostly second hand items and still having a great time is rewarding to me.

I can't be sure my kids will be there when I am older-- I hope they do not go far. BUt jobs can be anywhere in the world now.I do find it interesting that my DH family live within an hour o each other by my family is scattered all over the US and don't have( much) contact. We spend TIME with our kids. My kids reflect what I have taught them.
