Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

You mean you don't have an official, blue blooded, heritage line LGD and you still get protection from predators????  :th   Many on these forums would call you a liar on that one, I tell ya!  When you insist it is actually true, then they reply that there is no way you could have coyotes because they could kill bigger dogs than yours with much ease and, furthermore, your dog won't "bond" with the flock and so cannot truly, in reality, in all good concise definition, be called a LGD...even though it does indeed guard the livestock successfully.  C'mon..get with the program!  :old

I remind them over and over how farm mutts have been doing "livestock guardian" work since time began but they still insist they are not uniquely bred over hundreds of years for the job and therefore cannot truly be considered guarding the livestock.  Doesn't matter...it's like talking to a wall.  Kudos to you and your farm mutt and all the other dogs like him and my Jake who are out there putting in the hours and the effort and getting no credit at all on the pages of livestock forums.  :woot
Thanks! Nope, just mutts. Got Jake, the one pictured from a pet store. Just got really lucky with him. Got the other smaller one (Missy) later & she learned from him. :D They're only limited by their short coats, so can't be out in the cold of winter. This is when free ranging stops & the birds are yarded in a big fenced area around their coop. Have those nite guards attached to fence on all sides. So far so good. ;) Wanna see a pic of Missy?

Yep! I have a Jake too! Have you ever tried leaving them out all year and seeing if they grow coats to acclimate to the winter weather? My sis used to keep her Boston terriers inside because everyone said they would freeze if they were outside in the winter....then she married a fella that wouldn't let her have dogs in the house and so the Boston went out. The dog thrived and wintered very well in all temps, loved living outside and killing rodents all the time.

Temporary for the CX. Lol I give them 12 hours before its full lol of some hot compost! Actually I have MANY compsters and piles going...filling gardens now toilet it break down more and all this new waste goes back into another pile :)
I use and sell it all. It's amazing stuff.

Smart woman!

Hey, We're missing someone around here! Where is RoseMarie? She was ill for awhile but I thought she was all better? Are you out there and how are you doing? We of the world of chickens want to know!! : )

I agree...haven't seen her for days.  Miss her posts and praying she and hers are well.  :love
Same here. :fl

I have thought of that. I think they'd be alright. Jake is a Beagle x Boston Terrier & loves to chase & kill rodents of all sizes. Missy is a pug x ?. I'm sure she could get her share as well. Does your sis have a dog house or is that not necessary?

I agree, very resourceful!

I think hers just slept in the barn. I have a dog house for my dog and it sits up off the ground on bricks, has a layer of cedar shavings in the bottom, filled to the max with hay and has a cloth~ double layered~ hanging over the door. It also has hay bales on all sides during the winter months as extra insulation. Snug as a bug in a rug.

In fact, it's so snug in there that I place it right next to the pop door that always stays open, just in case he fails to hear a pred when he's asleep in there....doubles my chances that he will awaken before it can get in that coop. It's hard for one dog to stay on alert 24/7 but he's doing a bang up job so far. He used to have a partner but she got old and had to have the hand of mercy.

In the warmer months he rarely ever uses his dog house and so it is moved away from the coop and kept in the shade, still comfy and cushy if he should want to sleep there but the hay bales are removed and the cover thrown back so he has a good view and smell of the coop and yard.
