Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

It's my first time on a cruise as well. A belated 40th bday gift from my mom. Of course the only stipulation was she got to go :) I will post some pics when I get back. Still have 2 more days till we leave so trying to get the house set before I go. My son will be home watching all the critters but he refuses to do anything with the hens so 2 friends will share the job. I'm blessed they are willing to help. And they know they get fresh eggs in exchange :)

I put the 2nd heated bowl in the coop but didn't plug it in. I told my friend if temps stay below freezing like they said it will be, it needs to be plugged in and their ff put in it. I put some shavings in the coop and tomorrow big bag of leaves to keep them happy. I tend to overdue things before I go away, want to make sure everything is set while I am gone.

I do the same thing...always have. And every time the animals are fine when I return and all the over the top preparations were enough and then some to see them through.

What fun you get to go with your Moms!!!! I wish I had went with ladies instead of with a guy...much, much more fun to go somewhere like that with a good girlfriend or two instead of a guy. Different focus on fun. My mother would never go on something like that as she is deathly scared of water but I wish she would so she could experience all the beauty and all that wonderful FOOD.

Since Jason got pretty good reviews, I thought I'd put up a few more pics. I really miss and worry about him.

Heck...I'll even put on up of me, taken just after college graduation...

That good looking son definitely looks like pop! Now how about a current one? Just sos I have an honest picture of the man when I read the words on here. : )

Great pics folks. I love photo bombs.

I couldn't resist a few today what with the weather having changed to +14 C. Very warm for this time of year.

Shelz's beautiful chickens with the feathered feet; are they cuckoo Marans? But Marans have big combs don't they??

Thanks Bee, so it is a form of wild onion that really stinks? Okay, so they are really delicious when cooked or raw? And I'm curious as to what yummy looking finger food "cute son" is chowing down on? Can you tell I'm hungry?? : )

They are both, yummy when cooked or raw. They are also a cultural experience here in the mountains, with festivals created just around ramp season. They have charity benefits featuring ramp dinners, the local pizza place offers ramp pizzas, they are sold along the highway and the location of ramp patches are guarded as "secret" and are much like the family treasury. Hillbillies take their ramps quite seriously. You can smell someone who has been eating ramps long before they reach you and before they open their mouths...the smell seeps out of the pores of their body.

It's a mountain thing.

Hearing (reading!) all of that makes me glad I'm in Texas but the rest of the time sounds so divine. If I had money I'd have two homes; one in the boonies somewhere in the mountains which would be perfect for when it gets too hot for man or beast here in Texas and then be able to come back here when the weather gets really ugly---like with power outages and such. Dream on! : )

Pop has gone to seed.

But when the weather breaks here (raining buckets), I'm going to try to get this new camera to work to get some more and better pics of the birds so I might as well have my helper take one of me too...just to scare everyone!

By the way...Jason is single (never Married) and is talking about looking for a good women to settle down with when he gets back to the states. He has changed his mind about making the Corp his Career. He told me he has learned some lessons about women....one is that the prettiest physically might not be the best wife material. He's going to look for one who can carry two bails of hay at a time, pull plow and give birth while field dressing a deer she had just harvested.
