Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Bee,

My birds get the same food they have always gotten. I ferment flock raiser, scratch grains, & cracked corn. I give them a pretty big meal in the morning and then a smaller meal at nite. I don't have a heated dog dish and I'm not going to drive 60 miles to get one. I am not going to worry too much about the water as what they are getting seems to be enough or I don't think they would be laying well.

Their coop is well built with a thin insulation of maybe R5. It has good ventilation under the eaves. Their roost is a 2 to 3 inch walnut log although some think they need to sleep in the nest. We have a tarp along the west side and over part of the top of their run so they can get out of the wind and snow but still go outside if they want. I never make them stay inside that is their choice. The turkeys always go out and spend a good portion of the day outside no matter the weather the chickens however will go out check the weather and then make up their minds, mostly in this cold they choose to stay inside.

I had a pretty good supply of dry leaves, I thought, but some of them got wet and are now frozen so I didn't think they would do much good in the coop. That is why I got the straw for them.

We haven't had any rain thankfully, just a lot of snow. I think we have about 12 inches on the ground right now. I just banked a bunch of that up against the coop to keep any air from getting underneath it. It works really good as an insulater.

I actually worry more about the horses than the chickens. I let them out of the barn today but think I will keep them in tomorrow with the wind chills so low. I sure don't want them getting frostbit ears. The cats will probably appreciate that since they like to get up on the horses and sleep. I suppose that works out for both of them in keeping warm.

I've heard of cats doing that...I think that's adorable!!! Can you get us a pic? I had a chicken that would ride around on and sleep on one of my sheep in the winter. It was cute!

That's good to know that you are feeding what you always feed and are getting the same results you always get. Confirms my suspicions on that matter.

I didn't know that horses could get frost bit ears...I had never heard of that! I wonder what the wild horses do in temps like these to prevent such a thing?

They are like tribbles, one or two are adorable, but the more they are the less cute they become!!!!!

But when you put them all together you get scenes like this out your bedroom window...and it takes your breath away and inspires you to thank the Lord with all your heart for the variety of His creation! Just can't see such things in the summer time...lovely.

Hey Beekissed,

I found something the other day you might be interested in. It was a hand hay/leaf baler. It was made to hand bale lawn grasses or leaves. It included instructions on how to build it so I thought I would try it out. As many trees as I have around here it shouldn't be any problem to gather enough leaves to put into a baler. Would sure make it easier to store those leaves and maybe keep them dryer. Maybe some of the others on here would be interested also.

Kassaundra love the pics!!! See snow can be pretty :)

I spent the morning reinforcing coop against high winds and protecting it from the wind chills they are forecasting to up to -30. Board insulation between hay bales & wall of coop and plastic to create a warmer space when temps are frigid low. I'd like to add we have had wind chills up to -10 & they were fine just the way the coop was before today. But occasionally they get snow crystals on higher back so trying to prevent that also.

The plastic hanging down has been rolled up to keep it out of the way. I will let it down when temps fall and put back up if we have another artic storm. I was so worried about air movement I left the front door open till 4 but the window in the door is open now. I will leave it like that till after dark. Temps have been mild all day & I don't want them to get to warm. There is still enough spots for air to get in but I surely don't like it covered as much as it is lol. That board insulation will be coming off as soon as the temps warm up some. You know like the 20s? :). I also cut holes in the plastic where roof vents are. Girls were happily making craters in the DL bathing. Guess the wood ash is not attractive today lol

Then I put a tarp over fence & secured it over both items between exit tunnel and dog crate where food is stored so they can get to food with battling the wind chills.
