Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Hey, Rose...wanna do a hatch together? When are you going to start? We can keep track of them over on The Front Porch thread so we can get some good content there. I've got to do a practice hatch with a DIY incubator before I get good eggs to set in March, so it will all be new for me.

Front porch thread? Is that on here? I don't have a clue when I'll start Bee. I am trying to gather them up now and use only the RIR ones. I wanted to fill up my bator since I have changed roos and also didn't have the roos in with the girls for such a long time. I needed to let them be in with him long enough to get a good batch of fertile eggs. Or I'm HOPING for a large batch of fertile eggs. lol Anyway was going to fill up the bator so I will make sure to have enough to hatch I HOPE. Yeah chicken hatching is new to me to. Got to find me a good place to do some reading so I will get it right on the incubation stuff since I've only hatched out ducks before.

I'm gathering eggs right now too and also making a DIY incubator/brooder combo that can hatch chicks and also brood them afterward from items I already own. It's been a challenge....I'm thinking I would like to start my hatch on Wed. this week if I have all my ducks in a row. It ought to be interesting...I've never incubated anything in my life!

This is a practice hatch to see if it will work before I get some good eggs from a great breeder in March and attempt to hatch them successfully. I'd hate to waste such gold. I'm going to try to hatch each breed/mix equally...so many WR, so many BA, so many Dels, etc. I even got an egg from my old Mama hen! I'm hoping that Little Red will make a contribution too.

No, I didn't think you were kidding. I was laughing at your Mom and Dog arguing together, and wondering if you film your boys making you laugh so hard...

Here ya go, Lacy! We'd be glad to have you! We were trying to get folks from all over the world to visit The Porch and were keeping record of how many states...and then they stopped letting me edit the front page in order to add each state or country.

Yes, I'd love to hatch together! I'll be starting a thread about this method a little later as it's a little unconventional, but I'm not going to do that until after I candle an egg after the 7th or 8th day. Want to see if it's even going to work before I start telling about it. If it's working, I'll document it with pics and maybe video so that I can put it up on my YT channel when I get it going.

This is going to be a doozy of an experiment if it works!

I got stalled...hit that creative wall again. But...I am thinking about doing a YT channel instead and monetizing it. The more subscribers and hits, the more money it makes. I'm not thinking it will make enough to even support one 4 yr old child in Guatemala for school supplies , but it's all I have the strength for right now. Time is closing in.

I'm going to do some vids on FF, deep litter, flock management, processing, rooster management, free range, etc. Will try to keep it light and amusing, while informative. You people will see my incredible fatness in person and can finally put a face with the name~try not to hate me because I'm beautiful. I'm hoping to have a lot of variety(gardening, chickens, homesteading) and throw in stray vids of my funny family just doing what they do best...like when the Bat argues with the dog and he argues back, or when my boys get together and make me pee my pants laughing.

I'm thinking of calling it The Old Fat Hen...whatdoyathink?

Oh, but Rosemarie...I don't see it as a put down. That's the whole point. Folks in this world think the word "fat" is a bad thing and that people should be ashamed of being fat, like it's a scarlet letter on the chest. I've come to accept that I've been heavy for most of my life, I'm still heavy and that's just how I look, not who I am. Fat is a description that is apt, just as apt as skinny is for skinny things and it holds no negative connotations for me...just for other folks. They are the ones that think fat is a dirty word, not I. Fat is just my size, it's not who I am.

I happen to love big fat ol' hens and think they are rather lovely!

oh that's too cool and if it works you gotta share your bator idea and how you made it etc. on your videos. I have an incubator that I did my ducks with but the glass holes aren't really big in it so I borrowed my nephews and I just got it all cleaned up tonight. Going to let it sit out in the sun a couple days to allow it to air dry and hopefully sun clean it as well.
