Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Thanx Bee...... :D

Oh yeah running out of space quick! I do plan on putting them in a much larger space on the carport. Hubby took my light apart to keep the cats warm when it got really cold a few weeks back. He took the clamp off it and I need to get the clamp put back on there when he can figure out WHAT he did with it. Sure hope he didn't toss it. Anyway I wanted to put it on and see how warm it gets in there at night time so I can see IF they will stay warm enough.

If you can't find it how about a heating pad.

Rose, the crumbles actually hold their grainy form better than the pellets, but that is really more because the pellets become tiny and grainy to the same amount. If you get improperly milled crumbles or sift through them carefully you will find some half milled pellets.

The crumbles are just milled and sifted pellets! At least that is my experience fermenting Layena vs Flock raiser. Grainy mush either way.
I was just wondering about it because I wanted to buy the higher protein because it's the same price and I can mix stuff in it and my feed will go farther BUT they only have it in pellets in the brand I want to use. That's why I was wondering. Thanx for your input.

RoseMarie, they are so sweet. A real handful. This is the third time I've watched one of your videos and I keep getting side tracked. This time it was about cooking cornish game hens. About 10 different videos.

lol thank you.

They are eating now like there is NO tomorrow and I NEED to get em in a larger pen so I can put their food in the larger plastic food tray thing with the cover over it to keep them outta their food. The tray will NOT fit in this pen with them in it to.

just NOT big enough. lol

For any of the newbies to fermented feed, just wanted to say that it seems hot water placed into your feed appears to create the fermentation faster.

Don't use water that is too hot or it will kill the microbes and kill your fermentation. A little above luke warm but comfortable enough to put your hand in is good.

Is anybody fermenting layer pellets instead of crumbles? Just curious how the pellets ferment? Does it take it longer or will it fall to pieces or does it stay together in pellets?

Hi Rose Marie. I use pellets just to cut down on the dust a little bit. They break down real fast. By the time I have everything mixed up and give it a final stir you can't tell they were ever pellets.

alright! That's just what I wanted to hear! Thank you TW! With the 20 or 22% protein my food will go much farther and I can cut it with some kind of grain. I'm needing to work on my feeding with these production rir's because they're laying sooo much I don't think they're getting enough protein. They have pulled that poor roos tail feathers out again and all those hens that had naked backs STILL have naked backs and I think they;re keeping them plucked out as they try to come back. I never catch them doing this but hubby said the other day one hen was on one side of the roo and one was on the other and they were working on them. I was like WHY wont he peck em! lol
and YES on all that dust! You should see the shelf in my utility room where that ff is. :(
