Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

okay i have a question... I'm getting a bunch of broilers on thursday, and i have feed that is fermenting right now. i am also getting 10 turkeys.... can they be fed fermented chick starter?

i read turkeys need higher protein, but i also read fermenting increases the protein in the feed.....?????

HELP

Keep it simple....feed them all the same thing. It will be enough. When we had turkeys they ate what the chickens ate and then later just foraged for their foods and had a little whole corn each day. What poultry need and what people say they need are often two different things.....VERY often.

Wow! I can't believe I hadn't seen that article by Tikk Tok before! Just read the WHOLE thing, including comments... AWESOME!!!

just LOVE this site :D i agree... the article was awesome.

anyone know whether fermenting ACTUALLY adds protein to the feed?? say.,,,, if someone fermented 16% would it end up being at least 18% (for my hybrid layers)

Some of the studies I found actually state protein is increased because it's changed to a more usable form and that boosts the protein levels....others say it makes the protein levels in the grains be fully utilized, which means you are getting the full 16%~which I presume means you are not currently getting in its dry, unfermented state.

Not sure. I treat it like a protein boost and so temper my feeding in that manner. It's one of the reasons you get by feeding less because nutrients are boosted and they don't need to eat as much to get the same level of nutrition as formerly fed.

I believe its a need for meat protein not just protein in general.

Check your local grocery or butcher as well. I found chicken hearts & livers that are packaged cheap. I run them through the food grinder and put them in individual baggies & freeze them. Mine got ground beef because my son wanted tacos and I put it on the counter to defrost & forgot about it lol Was not bad but it wouldnt of been used today since I work so the girls made out well :)

I also have friends & family save me turkey & chicken carcasses & ham bones. My girls love to pick those clean. When they are done I toss them in the compost.

I am still finding pieces of bone in the garden where the hens are for winter. Thank goodness my neighbors cant see me tossing bones in the compost lol Every time I find one I chuckle as I toss it in the compost thinking it reminds me of a grave yard with bones scattered around :)
LOL @ you I can just see you tossing those bones. Hee hee neighbors will think you killing folks and letting the chickens pick em clean.

Ok will do. I've been giving them our bones and stuff and turkey liver, gizzard etc. Last week and the week before I did a turkey breast in the rotisseire and gave them the bones and had bought the whole turkey so I boiled it and gave them the fat and all the other we didn't eat from it.

Thanx you guys for the suggestions!
