Fermenting?

I use to ferment my scratch feed, I don't use it anymore.

But the way I did it, was use a clean empty folders coffee container, fill it halfway with scratch, then add water an inch above the scratch. Place a fine mesh cloth over it to keep the dust out. Then left it on the counter for 3 days. Fed the chickens after 3 days of fermenting. Smelled like yeasty bread.

I make it simple as possible - water + feed + 24 (or more) hours. I use large uncovered glass jars (think my current one is 2 gal) and my "ratio" is about 1" of water over the level of feed, but you will need to experiment to see what works for the feed you're using as well as your climate. My goal is to have a thick, oatmeal like consistency. I feed until the jar is empty, then add more feed, more water, and continue.

I found American-made fermenting crocks and bought the 1-gallon size. There’s a matching ceramic top keeps anything from getting in the ferment. I’m feeding Scratch & Peck mash and most days I add 5 scoops and (2) 16-oz bottles of water, stir, and let sit about 24 hours.

I may be oversimplifying but..... I just put about 5 or 6 days worth in a 5 gallon bucket and wet it to about a thick gruel. maybe oatmeal? feed out of that until its about gone then refill.

smells like beer.

I go through it before it "turns"

sometimes it gets a little "growth" on the top that looks grey but not fuzzy in anyway.

been working out fine. they lap it up
