I heard my roos crowing over and over, half the day this weekend. Kept going out to check, didn't see anything. Finally, went in and they were all roosting on the highest roost and two of the roos were crowing at the top of their lungs and staring at a feed sack that had not yet been put into a plastic bin...And a chipmunk ran out of it.

These are the same roos who beat the snot out of a possum, who are trying to mount every pullet in the coop regardless of age, who are like fluffy, muscular seven-pound basketballs and who are certainly capable of killing and eating a chipmunk.

What is wrong with my boys? Why are they so scared of a mere 7-ounce chipmunk? It was eating their scratch grains, don't they care about their food? Even the smallest of my hens could have taken out a teeny little chipmunk, and I've got some aggressive hens with strong claws and beaks. Or do they not defend territory unless they think they personally are in danger?

Maybe they defend their girl but not their feed?
