This is my first flock and they just started laying on Thanksgiving. I got an accidental rooster in there but wasn't sure he was up to the task yet. Have seen a lot of mating with the first hen to lay though. This looks fertile right? Laid by an Easter egger.

Thanks! He is only interested in the one hen who is laying. I feel bad for her! The others need to catch up asap!!

Are all your birds the same age?
Usually young cockerels try to mount all birds, ready or not.
Might be a good sign that he is leaving the others alone.

Interesting. Yes, they are all the exact same age.
You have no other older cockbird(s)?
Amazing......he could be a keeper for sure.....unless he's harassing the others when you're not looking ;-)

I guess he could be, but I just saw him mounting the other Easter egger today so I think he really wasn't. I have spent a lot of time out there with them winterizing the coop and hadn't seen him try anything with the others. He's a GLW. Gorgeous but he has always seemed a bit dim to me. New to chickens though, so what do I know? He's generally gentle otherwise, has never attacked me, eats out of my hand but doesn't want to be handled.

Yep that's a fertile egg, I'm not sure what you mean by "dim". Good luck! :)

He may just be a mellow fellow......'most' young cockerels are terrors.
Time will tell.
