Fertile or Infertile

Oh, one other thing... shine your light down into the air cell end of the egg. You will see the veins more that way than from the pointy end. Especially at first. You will still want to check the pointy end, but up by the air cell will show you the quickest development.
And you also want to monitor the size of the air cells to make sure they are losing the right amount of moisture.

Not sure exactly what you are referring to. Maybe you are seeing the yolk? Some are more visible than others. I think it’s kinda like when you open an egg and some the yolk is more orange color, sometimes more yellow. I think the hens diet dictates much of that, so maybe that’s what you are seeing. Once all the blood vessels get going, you won’t see the shadowing much. But if it’s infertile, you’ll still see it, you just won’t see any blood vessels.

If you can remember, what happened with the above egg? I have a hen who seems to have gone broody and a few of the eggs under her looked like that. Someone else said not to leave eggs under to start with but separate her and once its determined she is actually broody put eggs under. I just don't want to try and eat these eggs if they have already started to develop.

How long has she been sitting on them?

Mine ended up being fertile and hatched, but how long has she been sitting on them? I could be wrong but i thought i seen something on here awhile back saying development starts day 3. I'm not 100% though.
