The proper ratio of rooster to hens is 1 roo to 8 to 10 hens. They all need to be mature and have been mating for at least 2 weeks before the eggs will consistently be fertile.

How do you know they are not fertile? Have you tried to incubate eggs and failed or have broodies been setting and failed?

We're glad to have you. Your hens will lay more fertilized eggs if you have the correct rooster to hen ratio, and old enough (but not too old) rooster, a vigorous male, and mature hens without any disease or reproductive tract problems.

You should keep one rooster for every 10 hens you have.

An egg will have a bulls eye in the center indicating fertility. The only way for hens to lay fertile eggs is to keep a rooster.

Hi, welcome, make sure you have enough hens and roosters. Also make sure your hens are laying to. You can tell if they are fertile by candling the with a flashlight or a cup of water.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You have been given some good advice by the other members. That 10 to 1 ratio is very important. Less roosters and some of the eggs will not be fertilized. More roosters and the hens will likely be over-bred and battered. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have.
