Fertility question

If I saw a male mate with a female & I know which eggs are hers, is it safe to assume that her eggs will be fertilized for the 10-14 days? If he continues to mate with her on days after (he lives with the girls), does the timer start over?

I have coturnix quails.

If he has been with her for a while, then yes, her eggs will be fertile for a week or two. If he just moved in with them, don't expect fertile eggs for one to two weeks, since the eggs are already in the pipeline, so to speak.

If he's a young male (less than a year old), you can assume that he's mating frequently and the eggs will be fertile for a week or two after he's gone.

They’ve always lived together & will continue living together. They’re all under a year

So if he’s never removed & continues mating with her, she will basically always have fertilized eggs?

As long as he's doing his job, yes. If you put eggs in the incubator and none develop it's time to replace your boy.

Or it could be she is expelling the sperm packet....it's possible.

I read about that - female rejecting the sperm. How do you know? By incubating or seeing if her egg has a bullseye?

I incubate and candle in about 5 days. I set a large batch of calico fee too early this year and only got one chick out of about 40 eggs.

You can either incubate them and check to see if they are developing after 5 to 6 days or crack a few open and check for the bullseye!
