Fertilzation of the Hen

Okay, I'm gonna be the big dummy here... How does the sperm from the male get there to the yolk? I've watched this "chicken dance" between the roo' and the hen and never could quite understand it myself...How does it make its way in there?

Secondly, is the sperm that lil' stringy white stuff in a fertilized egg? That was what my grandmother told me when I was a kid. Of course, my brother once told me when I was in my late teens that my "kanookum valves" on my car were going bad... (*sigh)

I know, a lil' TMI...

Blessings...

Were there 7 the other night?

I agree with PC when two chickens fall in love(chickens dont have to marry) they have eggs and 21 days later thier babies arrive.(hatch) that is the best I can do here.

No, you can't see sperm with the naked eye. Even the world's largest sperm cannot be seen. It is a simple gamete with the contents of half a cell. Pick up a biology book and look into the section about reproduction. The stuff you find there will be applicable for almost all multicellular organisms bar things like sponges. Even plants and bacteria "do it", just each type does it slightly different. The principals will be the same.

When ever things get fertiled, be it a plant or animal, the male gamete will propel its self towards the female gamete by following cillia or cytokines. It all happens on the molecular level.

...That's what I love about coming here. You can always find or get the answer, albeit some answers are like PurpleChicken's, but still someone always comes along and guides you in the right direction.

Thank you!
