I am treating my rooster for micoplasma, he's been on Denagard and oxytetracycline for a week. I dropped the Denagard today so its day 8 for the oxytetra. I've seen a little progress, not as sleepy little less gunk in mouth but eye still swollen shut. It's been closed for a week, I am putting teramycin on it from the vet. Do I switch to tylan injectable, I will be giving it to him orally. I don't want to inject it I'm worried about bruising or other problems he is also fighting bumblefoot which is not really healing so I don't think he has much of an immune system right now. If I switch to tylan what is the oral dose, he weighs a little under 8 pounds. I would be mixing it in a little pureed food to syringe in him. Casportpony you have been giving me good info do you have any thoughts on this?

The makers of Tylan say that the oral dose is 50 mg per pound of body weight per day, sowith Tylan 50 that's 8 ml per day. Veterinarians recommend giving it 3-4 times a day, so that's 2 ml four time a day or 2.7 ml three times a day.

I know it seems like a lot, but that's because the majority of posts recommend way too low a dose.

His eye looks a little less swollen today, so do you think it's a good idea to switch meds or stay on the oxytetra for the 14 days. He was eating some scratch and meal worms and I was also syringe feeding him before his eye closed but he stopped completely eating and drinking when his eye closed. I get about 240cc of water in him a day with his pureed food and the vet gives him fluids twice a week. He doesn't charge me, he really wants to save him. He gave me sulfatrim for him but I decided to give him Denagard and the Oxytetra instead.

A lot of people would probably cull him but I have a closed flock. I have 8 hens also and they are 7 years old and older. I don't get many eggs and when they all die I won't be having any more chickens.

Are you treating for Mycoplasma Synoviae or Mycoplasma Gallisepticum?

If the latter, There is no effective treatment. Tylan can reduce the death rate but survivors are still carriers. MG is a reportable disease in most states. It is highly contagious and worse in colder weather so I hope you have it separated and in a warm place.
