fighting OEGB hens

Quote:
We have had in the low teens here and My two have not had a problem. That may be due to me giving them a late snack of whole corn around 4pm or so...

My birds are outside 24/7. We'd have low 20s, and even in the teens one night with snow on the ground. Didn't phase my OEGBs a bit, even the Shamo i have (which oriental gamefowl have cold hardy problems due to the tight feathers, and also some don't have many feathers) was fine. I'm getting to think as long as it's not near 0 or is below chickens can pretty much withstand it, but that isn't to say i don't take precautions to help keep them warmer too.

PS. My OEGB hen is mean too, will try and fight the American game hens that free range and are twice (maybe three) times her size! I kind of like that though, i like birds with a little "spunk".

well the weather here has been warm for the last week, in the low 30's, but it's not uncommon to drop down to 12 degrees at night. LOl and my birds HATE the snow with a passion.

If they are used to a warmer area and you move them to a much colder area it would be hard for them to get used to it. Would they be in an insulated coop? I would separate the mean one and put her by herself for a while, possibly a day if you can. Then add her back in to see how it works out. I did that before and it seemed to work. When she goes after them just flick her beak so she knows you mean business. I stood and watched and gaurded for a bit to be sure it would work out. Good luck!

Well these little ladies are back at it

, I was putting them outside during the day and bring them in at night, so they could get used to the temp. before I make them stay outside. Well 2 day's into it we get hit with cold and a bad snow storm

. I put a cardboard nest boxt in and that let the other hen hide. Today I took it out and what did I have, more fighting

. It's been getting in the 30's during the day I think I might move them outside tomorrow. The hen they pick on is all black. I have a theory about sold colored birds either really light or really dark. I've noticed they have the most trouble and get pecked the most. My pore Black OEGB gets picked, my yellow golden used to get pick by my chucker, peahen, and lady amherst. Both these birds are on a color extreme either really light or really dark. What do you guess think about this?
