Howdy folk!

I was doing some genealogy and realized just how very many of my ancestors were farmers, and decided to get some chickens for my backyard. I ran down to Tractor Supply and got 6 bantam straight-run (2 died within 2 days, one was really small and I think he was just going to die, but the other I am not sure about) and then I went back a couple days later and got 4 orpington pullets, so as of now I have 8 five-week-old chickens, going outside next week.

I have been lurking for about 10 weeks, going through the information compiled here. I am probably just creating this account to upload some pictures of my chicks so you experts can tell me what I have, and then will go back to lurking. Chick pictures coming as soon as I can get them to sit still for solo identification pics.

Greetings from Kansas, Steven, and :welcome! Pleased you joined our flock! That's a cool reason to get into chickens...reconnecting with ancestors! Sounds like you know your way around BYC pretty well but if you haven't discovered it, you can chat with fellow TX poultry folks in your state thread in this link: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread
Good luck and thanks for joining BYC! :)

Welcome!

When you say “tell me what I have” do you mean breed gender or both? Looking at that one pic, I think you might have at least 2 cockerels but do not hold me to that.

If you post the individual full body shots and heads shots including comb and wattles on this Forum, you will get some opinions: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member and do not return to lurking. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share more pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

Teila has given you an excellent link for breed & gender. I would just add that you put their age - at time of photos, in your post. Age can make a big difference in evaluating them.
