Hey all! This weekend, my rooster spurred me all up my leg. He got me in the knee so bad that I couldn’t walk right for three days, so I’d like to get him back. What can I do about his spurs? I’ve heard of the hot potato method, but that just removes the top layer. Could I clip/file them down with nail trimmers and filers, or do I need specific tools?

You need guillotine style clippers like they sell for dog toenails, you clip a little bit at a time so you don't cut the quick underneath.
Keep some flour or cornstarch handy in case you clip too close and make him bleed. Good luck and be careful.:)

I'm still working on my stink immunity, i'll get there one day.
Your way is definitely the easier way on a rooster that isn't keen on having hands on him.
I tend to forget not all fellas go to sleep during upkeep.:)
I’ve done so many I’m immune to it now. You’re right though it does smell pretty bad.

I have no problems handling any of my roosters. I would rather their spurs be cut off blunt and short once a year. They don’t harm hens and tear up feathers that way. Dog nail clippers work but the spurs will ruin them eventually and the spurs will sometimes splinter, crack and then grow back all wonky.

For years I used a larger metal file, not the kind for finger & toenails. Just keep them blunted.

I figured @Henry&Friends might have more trouble handling the rooster being as they are getting spurred that is why your way would be better.
Totally right about the clippers, finally bought a set with replaceable blades to help with some of the issues. I can't nip the one here too far even though i'd like to he might need them so he gets to keep a good bit.

It's better to start them with a file. They get used to being handled without the added motorized noises. In a few months when he's used to being handled, and having his spurs blunted, get the Dremel, and just run it so he can hear it. Don't spook him with it. After that, it's not too hard to use the Dremel. Start with the sandpaper tubes. That way, if he pulls away, or fights a little, you don't hurt him, or yourself.
