I have an egg eater hen that I am going to try to break using an empty egg shell field with mustard. but I don't have a needle to put the mustard in. does anyone know how to feel an eggshell with mustard without a needle?

You can buy a syringe and needle (I'd suggest 16 or 18 gauge) at a feed store; not very expensive. I suppose you could do it with a straw but you'd have to tape the hole closed, I would think.

Hello and welcome to BYC

Good luck with your egg eater!

I would take a thumb tack or what ever you used to punch the hole in the egg before you blew it out, use that to make the hole bigger.

Buy mustard in a squeeze bottle and just squeeze it into the egg. It doesn't have to be perfect or fancy. You just want them to get a beak full of mustard when they peck through the shell.

This is how I did it back when I used this method. It did work, but I had to fill more than one. Think I used a dozen. That was a whole different flock. Almost every bird I own now has eaten mustard. They like it. Go figure. I had to resort to plastic, wooden and plaster eggs. They can't break them and I guess they figure "why bother?"

Hope you get your egg eater broken of her bad habit, soon.

Well I went out and bought a surenge for 33 cents and I tried to fill a shell with mustard but it the needle keept getting cloged. So I used dish soap and it worked much better. Plan on putin them in the chicken coop tomarow. Hope it works.
