Hi! I'm IjsChickenMama and I am so excited to join BYC! I'm going to be really boring and copy paste -- my brain is fried thanks to upcoming finals.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
  • Yes, had them for about a month and a half now.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
  • Eight -- for now hehe!
(3) What breeds do you have?
  • 4 Polish Crested Buff Laced (1 roo/4hens)
  • 3 Easter Eggers (1 might be an olive egger -- if that is a thing I'm trying to figure it out) am still uncertain about the one I am saying is an "olive egger" hoping she doesn't turn out to be a late blooming rooster.)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
  • The addition of so much life to our backyard and vegetable garden.
  • 8 pets to the family that have already shown us such personalities!
  • Opportunity to teach my daughter
  • Eggs (I will probably cry the first day I see an egg!)
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
  • Being active outdoors
  • Novice vegetable gardener
  • Singing
  • Being creative (sewing, painting, etc.)
  • Getting lost for hours online because I couldn't stop clicking on links embedded in Wikipedia -- who feels me there?
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a mom to an awesome daughter. We have a 1.5yr old Blue Heeler/Mini Aussie Shepherd mix. My husband is an artist, and I'm a recently Certified Nurse Assistant and working on getting into nursing school. I have wanted chickens my whole life so I'm really just over the moon still!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I have frequented BYC for years when reading about chickens (because you know, when you can't have chickens you spend ridiculous amounts of time obsessing over reading EVERYTHING you can about chickens -- am I right.. no? ok maybe I'm a weirdo!) Now that I finally got my chickens I decided to officially join!

Weirdo? You sound like a PERFECT BYC member!! And a pretty interesting person!!

As far as your "olive egger," I know Hoover's Hatchery promotes its Olive Egger as coming from "a couple of different crosses," including their Americana, which is itself a mix, and French Cuckoo Maran. In other words, a designer chicken that MAY lay a speckled green egg or a brown egg.

I have two of the "Americanas," which are just Easter eggers that MAY lay blue or green eggs. But Evie and Audrey have so much personality, that I will adore them even if they lay run-of-the-mill brown.

Good luck with your flock, your gardening and your finals! Let us know if you do cry when that first egg pops out. Lol.
