FINALLY a first egg, and a converted husband!

Our long wait is over, we have our first egg! And Ruby, our Rir, laid right in the nesting box like she was an old pro, did not expect that at all! My goodness my kids were sooo eggcited!

Best of all was to see my husband (who built me an amazing coop and run but wasn't thrilled with the idea of all these chickens) come running and be as excited as the kids! Ha! I think the hens have converted him! Victory!

Congratulations!!!! First eggs are always very special. Have heard of people turning them into a Christmas decoration. We just ate ours. Our new pullets just started to lay this week. Not as exciting as a very first egg, but a feeling that we must be doing something right.

Yeah we fried it up right away and ate it....we each got a mini bite!

That's called a Pullet egg...Fairy or fart eggs are laid by mature Hens and usually have no yolk and are tiny....

raising chickens and getting your first eggs can be such a rewarding experience, harkening back on thousands of years of self sufficiency and cultivation by humans, it's kind of primal and cute and fun all at the same time! congrats!!

Question: So when does a pullet become a mature hen? I though it was when they laid their first egg? Or is it defined by something else like age?

At one year old they are Hens....Before that they are Pullets and Young Roosters are Cockerels....
