No. I'm saying getting off of our arses and making some real changes ourselves is. I'm saying holding our elected officials accountable for their actions and never (no matter what end of the spectrum your vote falls) being 100% satisfied with them, even if you do think they're on your side (I can't think of anything more American than dissent).

COMPLETELY AGREE!!

I do not know about what you all did with your STIMULUS $$ in 2008...but I know what I did with mine the last time Bush supposedly LOWERED our TAXES!!

Well...here in the State of NH...I got a $500 property TAX increase after the last stimulus $$ was sent out a few years back.

Truly....I'd only like to be ROBBED ONCE.

Fearing my property tax bill in FALL 2008!!

Wow, that would totally solve all our problems!

Are you kidding?? Nuke them?
1. Iraq has never done one single thing to us other then have more oil then we do.

2. Do you think any terrorist are that stupid that they would stick around if we give women and children a 48hour window to leave the country? Are we going to send messages stating "For Women's Eye's Only"??

3. Great, so now we have a bunch of refugees we need to feed and care for, for another 50+ years.

4. What gives us the right to take their oil? We don't own this planet thank goodness and if we did, it would have been destroyed by now.

Oh and the reason I think Bush is so terrible...I don't have ALL DAY but here are a few... He LIED to get us in a war we didn't need to be in. He appoints idiots to head important organizations (Like FEMA), he has no idea the cost of gasoline right now, he has spent more time farting around his ranch rather then governing his country.

we dont need to take care of the refugees. They are killing our people that are over there trying to help them. Just nuke them, and forget about them.

Frozen Feathers: So you want to take your tax dollars and help people out because they bought houses that were too expensive for them to pay for. Well I dont, it is a stupid idea.

Count me in as one of the 12 who love GW!!

Everyone hated Reagan and now they pretty much canonize him. GW will be viewed the same way in twenty years. Mark my words. No sitting president since Kennedy has had as much diversity to deal with.

I think the country needs Obama if for nothing else, to remind them what it's like to have a snake oil salesman in office. Honestly, the promises he's making are laughable.

I can't wait to see how many small businesses fold under the new taxes for the "rich" and the $10 minimum wage. It's going to be ugly.

At least I could say I voted for McCain, who is the most moderate Republican put up for election that I can ever remember. I'm actually hoping he reaches across the aisle and chooses his close friend, Joe Liebermann (I, former democrat) as his running mate. That will probably never happen.

Until us 'publicans and you dems learn how to play nice and meet in the middle, we're in for a long haul. I really think that the folks on the extremes of both parties are hurting this country. Just my 2 copperheads.

But it's ok that Bush took all of your tax dollars to send thousands (4113 as of today) of our men and women to die in a war that was a distraction from the real problem (terrorists), has made us less safe....and, oil costs are still rising.

And, for the record, not everyone facing possible foreclosure right now is an "idiot". I'm sure some are, yes, and I agree with you I don't think we need to bail everyone out who bought too much house for their money (again with the skewed vision of the American dream...I'll never understand the keeping up with the Jones attitude that got so many people into this mess, but that's another discussion altogether). But there are good hard-working people out there who have fallen on hard times, or perhaps just didn't understand the type of loan they got themselves into (adjustable rate) that, at least, don't deserve to be called idiots.

I won't comment on your "nuke all of them" comment. I don't want to go that place to find those words.

If you got an adjustable rate, then you basically are an idiot. Yes, there are people who have fallen on hard times, and I feel for them.

I dont think that Bush has made us less safe. He has made us safer!

The democrats just want to give everybody handouts, and not make them work.

SundownWaterfowl...you are surely living on another planet and, well, to keep myself from getting banned I'm going to leave your "out of this world" comments alone.

Economically, we may not like the idea of higher taxes but given our current situation we MUST either drastically cut spending (McCain's spending cuts are a joke - a drop in the bucket on the $250bil+ problem) OR raise taxes (which also means we shouldn't increase spending like Obama wants to).

You're not going to find someone who wants to see our tax dollars go to bail out people who made bad decisions on mortgages or banks who enabled people make those bad decisions less than me. But like it or not, both McCain and Obama have put forth plans to do exactly that.

EDIT:
Also, higher taxes will help to curb inflation. The best thing would be to cut spending AND taxes dramatically but there's no viable candidate willing to do it.

So if that can't happen unfortunately raising taxes is our best hope.

EDIT AGAIN:
Some people honestly didn't understand their mortgage. People like this are victims of Predatory Lending and I'm personally completely ok with those people getting help from the government. The govt should get that money back in double from the companies responsible.

However some people just over extended themselves and I think dificult as it is they must live with the consequences of their decision.

I dearly hope that you and your family never have to face such hardship that you need a "handout". Not everyone who has needed help is an idiot or a lazy person who doesn't want to work. Yes, there are plenty who abuse the system--and plenty who do not. Of course, you could keep your politicians in office who keep outsourcing all of our jobs overseas (and ignoring new and emerging technologies that would create more jobs, e.g., alternative energies).

But I still can't wrap my brain around the "nuke them" comment. I really have a hard time believing that such disregard for human life and disrespect exists in this country. America is better than that. Or maybe I'm being naive to believe so?

This thread was turning out to be a fun debate and an interesting discussion about alternatives to the oil crisis. I'm sure the original poster didn't intend such hatefullness to come out of it. Maybe we could go back to the original topic?
