Finally back on BYC...with a pea voice question!

Well, I got busy with the horses, and my Mustang Million mare, and completely forgot about BYC!

I just had a quick question. I have seen plenty of adult peas, but this is my first time owning any. They are only about a year old, so thankfully we still have a while to go, but how much louder are their adult voices compared to, say, a very obnoxious and territorial turkey tom?

Last night I saw a thread on here from a Vet, who does voice "reducing" surgery. His thread is titled "Quiet Peacocks Anyone?" or something like that.

Please note that the vet says he has actually never done this surgery on a peacock before.
To each their own, but I would think that it's best for people with noise concerns (their own or those of their neighbors) to avoid becoming peacock owners.

Peacocks scream when mating, when they hear a noise they do not recognize, a predator is near and to call (talk) to each other and some other reasons. It is mostly only during the summer months during breeding season. If you do not want to hear them then like posted above peafowl are not for you. Why risk the bird's life cause they make noise? If you are zoned to keep them then there is nothing anyone can do or say for you to get rid of them. If your bird dies you are out the cost of a replacement one so why risk it cause nature has them make noise?

I'm not necessarily worried about the noise. Just curious of how the level would compare to my *** of a tom.

I don't know how loud tom turkeys are, so I can't comment to compare. However, I can tell you that my neighbors have peafowl, and although the birds are about 1/4 mile away, I can hear them quite clearly. By contrast, I can barely hear their roosters crowing at all -- only when the wind carries the sound just right.

I don't think any soul could deny that peafowl are gorgeous, but hearing my neighbor's birds has prevented me from wanting to add any to our own yard ... :/

Way louder. I read that their sounds can be heard up to five miles away.

I know someone that has peas within 3 miles of me and we can not hear each others peas, but they sure get the dogs going late into the night.

Well it probably depends on the terrain and weather as to if you hear peafowl a distance away or not. Maybe if there is a large forested area it would block the noise more than an open field.

I don't think their noise is annoying, but maybe if you had a ton of peacocks it could get pretty loud. The less males the less noise.
