Here are my girls Princess Pei Pei the 4 month old Silkie who has (THANK GOODNESS) adopted and literally taken the 4 week old Barred Rock "Bernice" under her wing. I had to re-home my black Silkie rooster when he started crowing and Pei Pei was depressed all alone. I figured I could take advantage of the fact that she was still fairly young, and she just might adopt a chick -- she did! My son JUST NOW took a picture of the two snuggling, and when I get a chance, I'll post that pic too.

That is the perfect silkie type to me. no beard, small crest and CLEAN!
she looks gorgeous.

Also, about her adopting a chick, I had a silkie cross that adopted a game pullet I rescued. She hadn't even laid yet, but she took care of that pullet like her own chick.

I moved them to my grandparents, and the little game pullet met my 2 mean

, game hens outside. They started to beat her up and I just remember that silkie X sqawking and raising sin. I looked around the corner and she busted out the chicken door and jumped on those game hens- she taught them a lesson about messin with her baby

send more stories about adoptive hens too if you can!

Don't have a story about an adoptive hen but I do have one about an adoptive rooster. My giant cochin Doodle hatched just one egg in the cochin coop. It did fine until one day it fell into the waterer and nearly drowned. I rescued it and brought it into the house as it was winter. By the time I got her dried off and able to go outside Doodle would not pay any attention to her. The other hens were after her and Doodle did nothing. The only other coop I had available was her rooster Daddy Dutch. I put her in with him until I could build something for her. Dutch became so protective of her. He would call her to food, just like with the hens, They would cuddle together at night. I never did build another coop for her she has been raised with him, recently I had another little cochin that was being picked on, my son said why not try to put her in with Dutch. I chanced putting it into Dutches coop and he took care of that one as well. Now Dutch has two buddies in with him and I am considering putting another little cochin hen in with him as well. Dutch was alone before this as he was getting pecked in the main cochin coop. He was so gentle the other roosters would peck him.

Thank you! that was an incredible and sweet story! My DH who listened as I read it out loud even commented "that is a sweet rooster" and then caught himself of course... originally he didn't want chickens, and I just went ahead and brought them home anyway... now he loves chickens, and hearing your story made him smile and launch off on how much he loves our chickens...
lol, as I was typing this, he was telling me how much he likes having them sit on his shoulder... and then he got real quiet, and made the comment again " that was a sweet story, what a great rooster"

Maybe Dutch's owner and I could meet half way so he and Pei Pei could meet... you know, a little chicken "liason"? How romantic! ... wait, how far away is KY from OR?
