FINALLY DONE!!! The Hen House

Thanks!!
I'm doing deep litter right now.... But my husband is soooo OCD about the grass... -all those shavings.. Lol.. I'm thinking of switching to sand for summer cause it gets HOT here!! We were just talking about getting a load dumped.... So do you clean your everyday? Cleaning isn't a problem for me.... My main concern about sand is the smell when it gets wet.... Do you have problems with that?

We don't have any problems with smell in the coop as long as we keep up with the cleaning.

Does that ladder go to their roosting bars? I built a ladder out of wood and sticks but now that they are bigger and need more room... I was thinking about building one like that to save space until they decide they can fly up to the roost..... I love the way the sand looks... You have a nice flock...

I made a coop like to one on top of the page. Its about 18" from ground to floor of coop. My 12 chicks (ab 6 weeks old) will huddle together outside the coop rather than going inside. Could the ramp I built be to steep? Its made of plywood. I do not have "steps" on it. Help????

I'm new to this but I've read if it's too steep they won't go up... If it were mine I would add steps so they won't slide off.... Mine wouldn't go down the ladder the first day but would go up.. .. A few days later they got the hang of the ladder.. I also added some food on the ladder to coax them..

Yes it does. My RSL use the ramp but the white leghorn just flies up.

Yes, it can be to steep and yes it does need steps. You can use pieces of wood or sticks, etc. You may have to pick up your chicks one at a time and put them inside the coop until they learn that's where they are suppose to go. That can take from a few days to a few weeks. Do you have a light in the coop? Having a light on for an hour or so at sunset helps encourage them to go inside too.
