Though it took a lot more money, time and tears than I anticipated, I am VERY proud of my results.

My coop is 6x8 footprint, and 6' tall in the front sloping to 5' in the back. The pen is 6x20 and 6' tall. My brother and I built it in about 5 full days, with a little bit of help from the DH. It's a tiny bit smaller than I really wanted, but to go bigger would have increased the wood and wire budget significantly and left me with a lot of scrap. Soo, my 7 Jersey Giants, 4 Orps, and one possible Silver-Spangled Hamburg (I think that's what it was suggested to be) will have slightly small digs. If it goes well though, I'll be able to free range. My dogs are pretty good about not chasing the smaller animals around them. We'll see. XD

I went kinda crazy, and did 2x4 welded wire, with chicken wire around the bottom, buried and cemented into the ground about 6" deep. The top is covered in chicken wire too, but that may be upgraded to welded wire when I can convince my DH that he really likes the chickens. XD Also, I put in two nice vent hatches on the sides that get the most breeze, and a skylight for those winter months. The birds are already digging it, aside from running and huddling in terror under the nesting boxes every time I appear.

Here are some pictures!

And yes, that is duct tape on the middle of the nesting boxes. My brother insists that no home project is complete without it.

I'm going to update tomorrow when the flock heads outside for the very first time and I can get some more inside pictures without terrorizing them. XD

That is just adorable. I love how the roof line looks like crown moulding

I am sure they will be very safe and happy in there.

PS Try putting some of those brick pavers or something in front of the pen door too to deter diggers there. I think i am going to make the cement border on mine come out a few inches wider before winter comes cause the predators might get more desperate.
Great job

Hi Spoonie -

Thanks for sharing your coop/run photos. At least I know what a 6 ft high run looks like now.

My DH is in the process of converting a 8x12 tool shed and I cannot grasp how high he is building the run. I'll share our photos when he is done.

I will have to ask him how tall he is making our run. I sure hope it's not going to be 12 feet high...?????

Congrats,it feel so goodwhen youknow you gotit done, great job,I like the branches too it is a good Idea I am going to use.

I made my whole thing just big enough for me to walk into! I'm 5'8, so in the run I have plenty of head room, and I'll have enough in the coop itself to clean. hehe

I'm going to put a few more pavers I think, but my pen door already scrapes the concrete I have it so low. XD I made sure to leave no room. We have so many raccoons and weasels around here. I have heard but not seen coyotes. And every day there are hawks circling our yard to pick off the rabbits. X/

Hopefully this will do to keep my chickies safe. I'm pretty scared I will have done all this work and my chickens are going to get eaten before I even see an egg. *fingers crossed*

Very good! I love seeing everyone's coops and runs. Yours is very nice.
The chicks look so small right now but just wait, they will grow into their digs in no time at all. And they won't cower from you either. I get malled when I go down now and they are just over 2 months old.
Thanks for posting your photos!
