I had to order DE food grade online - found a good deal on a 10 lb. bag from Amazon.com. Wish I could have found it locally - the shipping was more than the DE - but at least Amazon had the DE for good prices!
Found what I believe to be (after looking at tons of pic's on Google) mites on my new roo. Of course, he's quarantined for the next 30-45 days, but I know with the wild bird population we have in this area - sparrows (several varieties), doves, wild turkeys, bluebirds, orioles, gold finches, etc., etc., mites & lice will always be an issue. My chicks are in what we call the 'chick play yard', which is attached to their coop and is fully enclosed with poultry netting, including the top. I would say it's 'predator proof', but after reading some of the stories, I'll just say I'm 99% confident it's predator proof.
That doesn't stop wild birds from sitting on top, flying over, etc. though, obviously. We've also had a problem with our dogs & fleas this year - 1st year in 3.5 of living here...and we treat our dogs with BioSpot religiously! Our veterinarian told us fleas were extremely 'bad' this year...and trust me, so are the mosquitoes!! Grr.
Needless to say, when my DE arrives, I'll be treating all my chickens, my dogs, the chickens' coop & play yard. I'm considering sprinkling some on myself & family members as well! LOL! Since we found the mites on Jake, I've been itching, itching, itching! I know it's psychological, but still!
