I finally got my first egg!!!!!!!! Exactly 17 weeks today. Momma was acting kind of wierd and kept being territoral in the coop. So I just kept watching her and kept my distance but kept a eye out on her!!!!! What a tiny egg. Its so cute!!!!!! Well here are some pictures of momma and her first egg... I have a few chickies out in the wood acting strange too... So need to go check them. Oh yah... I told her what such a good girl she was and how she worked so hard in this heat... and left the egg in there for about 15 minutes after she walked away from it, then stole it, was this correct??????

YEAHHHHHHHH

Question: Since she is the only one that layed and I have 30+ more that need to start laying... don't I need to wait until the others are laying before giving them layer feed? Also, I am just to put the oyster shells in a seperate area and not with the feed?? Am I correct on this??? Any help would be useful. Thanks

YAY!! I love hearing about first eggs.
The proud new layer looks exhausted!

What I've done is started mixing layer with the grower and slowly mix less and less grower. Best to get them on free feed oyster shell, too.

ugggggg I still have about full trashcan full of starter (plus a full bag in storage)... ugggg... what do I do with it all??? I can mix it.. but it will take me forever... well I guess the ducks can still eat it... they won't be laying anytime soon... or at least from what I have read they shouldn't be... Okay as for the oyster shells, I put it in a seperate feeder all by itself. so far I don't think I have any takers... but it is there for them if they want it.

As for my hen, she did not lay today, this is normal right??? I mean with this 100 degree heat I know I personally wouldnt want to be!!!!

she's a real trooper.

By the way, brings me to another question... we are replacing our floors so under our house is exsposed and the chickens hide under it cause it is so cool.... will they lay eggs on dirt???? I guess maybe I should get a flashlight and go crawling huh???

Pharr.... 3 eggs??? wait a minute now... not fair LOL... I have 40 hens and only got one... how old are yours???

Well, have a storm coming in... hopefully it cools things down!!! I guess I will get off this thing before I loose it...

Have a good nite all... and thanks

WindyOaksYokes,
She's a Barred Rock right? 17 weeks!!! Mine are 15 weeks on Monday. Now you have me all excited!!!

Congrats! Your girl looks like my beautiful Barred Rock, Betty. Betty still has about a month to go before she starts to lay.

Isn't exciting, though? Every time I go out to the coop it's like Christmas morning.
