Got these guys a couple weeks ago, the lady said the hen isn't a very good layer. She lays every other to every 3rd day.
So far we're happy with them and are possibly lookinto expand our Polish flock.
How do they look to you?
I know every bird is different and have their own personalities, however , I have the Meanest White
Crested Black Polish roo.
I raised him from an egg, cuddled him etc..( although at the time I didnt know if I had a boy or a girl )..
He was raised with 3 hens.
He always seemed very stressed out, if thats possible with chickens. He constantly runs himself ragged in the yard, checking on each girl, making sure they are all were HE wanted them.
Now, once the girls started laying, Phil, the roo, caught me off guard, and
Flogged me very bad. His spurs punctured my legs.
I "pinned " him, carried him around like a "football" showing him to his girls.
It doesnt matter what I do, he just attacks me every chance he gets.
Now, heres the kicker..My son ( who has been VERY involved with raising the birds and totally loves them ), and DH ( who has NEVER had anything to do with the birds) , can go into his coop, feed and water Phil and the girls with NO problem at all ..
Phil is a FANTASTIC roo for his girls. He has defended them 2 times against hawks before I covered their run, so, he is staying.
Ill just deal with his aggression the best way I can, but it's not about me...at the end of the day, is about his hens and their safety.
I took responsibility for this baby, and I am not, nor will I ever, be the person who just finds the "easy way out" IMHO , by selling, culling , sending them to Freezer Camp or the Stew Pot. !
I just Can Not get rid of an animal just for doing what he is genetically programmed to do..He didnt chose who he is, so who am I to end it for him ?
I do not have any young children who are around, but If I ever get any who wants to see the "pretty bird", I will take all necessary precautions for the child's safety.
Well, thats me and my roo...I LOVE HIM just the same..lol.
