Finally had an attack:-(

Karri, Until those with more experience come along, here's some thoughts......because puncture wounds are serious and often time sensitive. If I repeat anything in previous posts in this thread, please disregard - running to work and can't reread them all.

For pain, 5 regular (325 mg) aspirins crushed per gallon of water. A standard recommendation I've seen on BYC for a long time now.

For wound cleansing, others on BYC have in the past recommended gently applying a solution of 9 parts water to 1 part betadine. I have also read not to do this for deep puncture wounds so you may want to wait for someone else to weigh in on whether this is okay or not. Okay for more surficial wounds.

Neosporin topically.

Because of the puncture wounds she may need internal antibiotics in addition to the topical. I have seen various recommendations on which type and I honestly don't know which to recommend to you. I've treated chickens for dog attacks (grrrr...), successfully each time and if memory serves, not always the same antibiotic depending upon what was recommended ta the time. It's a Saturday so I don't know what you'll be able to get your hands on today or what you have on hand. But Sunday will be worse...

Warm, quiet, comfy place to rest. If she is really stressed, there are also homepathics that may help and not contraindicate with the meds. If she's not stressed, then maybe that's one less thing for you to have to chase down.

Nutrition to the extent possible - not sure what and if she's eating but maybe she'll take warm oatmeal with some of her food finely crushed and mixed in. Mine don't much like oatmeal but others really do - I have a hen under the weather and she will accept an organic egg scrambled (I hide some of her food finely crushed in that as well as some probiotic powder). Yogurt is good if she'll take it. I also get away with some crushed food and probiotics mixed in warm mashed butternut squash. Lots of other possibilities - if you have trouble getting her to eat I'm sure tons of good ideas will come your way.

Hoping all will be well.

Thank you so much for the help. I just now got the chance to check any advise given b/c of all of kids. I amnow going to do something with this poor girl, hopefully something that will help. I am just kind of confused right now:(

Do I talk too much:D I just noticed that I do!

Anyhow my friend just came over and we cleansed her (the chicken's) wounds with saline solution, than used iodine again, than used bactriban (a prescription antibiotic ointment). As we looked her over we realized that the whole underside of her body is badly bruised as is most of the top:( She has been slightly eating and stinkily pooing somwheat normally for two days now though. I am thinking that if there was mortal internal injuries they would have killed her by now. Thta's what I hope at least. I would like to put crushed aspirin in her water but it also has antibiotics in it. Do you think that would be ok???

If I knew a dog belonged to someone, and their dog acted aggressive towards any animal that I owned or anyone in my family, I would give the owner 1 warning what would happen to their dog, then the next time "bye dog!"! Same way in the country, one warning, dog threatening whatever's mine---1 shot "bye dog!"! In my yard and house, (I'm talking about when I move to the country) it's my rule---keep your animal (dog or cat), leashed or kept up, (yes, I've let my sisters, brothers, ,cousins, and my children know), or your animal will be shot if it runs my animals or family! Where we live now, you actually have to walk with a large weapon, like a bat, stick, or steel pipe to protect yourself from medium to large size dogs that sometimes run loose.

I understand about loose dogs trust me. I also happen to be a big softy kind of like gritsar. I accidentally let a wild mouse loos ein my house once b/c I was trying to revive it after a cat attack. My DH loved me enough to not kill me but he WAS NOT happy about that one!

WEll..after we cleaned her up and put all of the disenfectants and creams and such on her and gave her antibiotics, she seems to be doing better. She isn't going out for a marathon anytime soon but she has stood up more than lay down today and she ate alot more than she has been. I am looking at today as a success and now I am feeling more confidant that she will recover. Thanks so much for all of your help:D
