Finally Hatching Time! Pics!

Sounds so exciting, this March I’ll be incubating eggs for the first time. I know you said you have a two year old in the house as do I, do you have any advice to help keep the toddler from interrupting the egg process?

That’s great! This has been an amazing experience for all of us. I have a 2, 5, and 6yr old. I didn’t have to worry about the older ones at all. Although they still got lots of reminders. My little guy, he tries to do everything mommy does. Lol
So my advice would be:
-Put it somewhere out of reach (although this didn’t really help me out, because bubs is a climber)
-If your little one is anywhere around it without supervision (mine was sneaky and I didn’t catch him), I would check to make sure everything is how it’s supposed to be! Whether it’s incubation or hatching time
-Little ones are empathetic, so we explain how the chicks could not make it if we mess with the incubator.
-And just by rule of thumb, we don’t let any of the kids around the newly hatched chicks without supervision. They are shut away out of everyone’s reach! :)

I say all of this, but accidents still happen. My son was still able to be around the incubator behind my back and drop the humidity by opening the lid. I didn’t catch it in time, and we ended up losing a full, ready to hatch chick in the process, whom was almost zipped out. But in all of this, I have learned all of those pointers! Someone told me this is a learning curve, and it definitely is!

Good luck here in March! :)

Oh my heart! So sorry about baby #5, but I love seeing the pictures! I have always wanted to incubate eggs, or even just to have a hen go broody and do it herself.. I feel like I have baby chick fever, my little babies just started laying eggs today. Best of luck with the rest!

We got one more babe. So out of 11 eggs (the owner wasn’t sure were even fertilized because her Roos slow down in the winter), we got six chicks, five alive and well! The last chick is yellow and it’s so cute! According to the wing sexing method (I’m not sure how reliable it is), we have three girls and one boy for sure. Waiting on this newest babe to grow some feathers.

In the incubator, it’s day 26. I candled, and there’s three eggs that didn’t develop. Two that have, but didn’t hatch. Is this normal? And is there a chance they’ll hatch, or is our window gone now?

Rarely, and only with specific crosses bred for such.
You could guess by that route, 50-50 chance you're right! :D
Most breeds are sexable at about 4-8 weeks by comb size and color.
Congrats!
