Finally Joined the Flock

Hi Michael OShay. Last year we purchased the Black Jersey Giants and the Black Australorps at the same time. We could tell them apart until they fully feathered out. Now, we can't. They all look the same. My husband said that they are probably all the same breed. Do you know how to tell them apart? They are all around the same size.
Look at the bottoms of their feet. If the bottoms of the feet are an obvious yellow, it is a Black Jersey Giant. If the bottoms of the feet are any other color (whitish, grayish, pinkish), it is a Black Australorp.

Wow. Thank you so much. Any recommendations on what I can read/look at to learn all these details? I've ordered a surprise box from Cackle so I need to learn fast. It will be so much fun. It ships on March 23rd.

These kind of details a just a 50 year accumulation of reading, raising chickens, hanging out with other chicken owners, and spending time on the internet with other chicken owners (like we're doing here on BYC). See, now you know something (how to tell BJGs from BAs) that you didn't know before.) Obviously you can't learn all about every breed in a short time, so my recommmendation is to read and learn as much as you can about the breeds you have or are getting. Then you can always read about other breeds (particularly those you think you might be interested in) in your spare time. Good luck with your surprise box.
