Been caring for chickens in the High Mojave Desert is S.E. California for 27+ years, on a small scale.
I had 40 chickens before roaming dogs from a ranch a mile away massacred 30 of them in Aug. 2022. The dead bodies went into the compost pile or future tree holes. Now I just have 12 chickens. I plan to buy more in spring of 2023. Right now my ranch hands and I are preparing a series of forage yards we will rotate the chickens through. The idea is to get the chickens to feed themselves as much as possible to save the escalating expense of feed store feed.
I have 5 Americaunas, 2 light Brahmas, and 5 mixed breeds.

I love eating fresh eggs from my chickens. I avoid eating eggs from the supermarket or restaurants.
I am a permaculture gardener, using no-till method and wood chips.
I'm also a Cat Woman, with 7 of my own cats plus 3 strays that showed up a year ago. Yes, total of 10 cats. Well I live on 10 acres. That's only one cat per acre.
I found BYC doing a web search on feeding road kill to my chickens. Finally joined today after reading chicken info not found anywhere else in the WWWeb.

Welcome! I believe you may be on a local FB group I'm on or was on cause I remember this story! Such a tragedy on your girls. Glad you will get some new girls this year. Not sure how far away you are from the IE but howdy neighbor!

Welcome to the BYC!
I have 10 as well! All rescues. Imo, cats are amazing! (They also get along well with my fluffy butt girls😆)

I'm sorry to hear about your flock... I only have 13 girls, and it would probably break me were something to happen to them. Please do share pictures with us when you do get more chick(ens)! Photos of floofy babies are always welcome too ;)
