For the past week or so I have all of a sudden been really vigilant about checking for eggs at least two times a day, and my family has been making fun of me that I'm "Waiting for a miracle."
So, by Wednesday, I still hadn't got any eggs, and I said somewhere on one of my posts that I was just going to give up. Well, another member said that a watched pot never boils, and that when I give up, I'm going to get my egg.
Thursday, I go out to the coop and during my completely unexpecting egg check at 12:00 a.m., I see that some of the nesting boxes had little bowl-shaped holes dug in the shavings, and there was another one under the boxes.
So I was sorta expecting an egg, but none of my chickens were freaking like I heard they do when they're going to lay, so I wasn't getting my hopes up.
At 5:00 p.m., I went to go give them tomatoes, and do my final egg check. I walked in the coop and looked in the boxes. Nothing. I looked under the boxes. Nothing. I started poking around the corners, and the last place I looked was in the corner by the door.
I thought I saw something light brown and speckly as I glanced, and I had to do a double take. Right there in the corner was my beautiful little light brown, speckly egg, just as perfect shaped as could be. My eyes were going to pop out of my head
and I did a happy dance right then and there
.
I grabbed the little egg, told my chickens good job, and went up to the house to blow the egg so I could keep the shell, and I still haven't stopped holding it.
If you're getting depressed that your chickens haven't laid yet, don't be. Your time will come and it's totally worth it.
Oh, yeah and... the egg was perfect! Hard shell, no blood spots, no tissue, complete with yolk and everything!
