Hello all, I am a middle-aged bird brain in central PA who has been reading these wonderful pages for months now. Thank you all so much for the knowledge you have been willing to share! I have 6 hens at this time (lost one to a predator in September) but as far as I know only 5 of them are laying. One is supposed to be an Americauna so I'm hoping for a blue or green egg but so far have only gotten white ( my Buff Minorca) and brown ( 2 RIR, 1 BR and 1 White Rock. My husband built a coop for us out of all of the scrap wood we had been collecting for the last 30 some years. He said he took all the scrapwood and assembled into a large, recognizable piece of scrapwood!

The coop is inside a wire pen in our side yard, so most of the time they have access to that and then we also let them out for a few hours when we're home to free-range through the yards and woods. They love it, but of course I worry about predators. It's hard to balance my desire to give them what they most like with what I feel will keep them safe. It is so nice to know that we have this community to share with... thanks!
