Hello!
We're a family of four living in Southern California in the foothills above Santa Barbara. Last year we decided to keep chickens for eggs...and fun!
Building the coop was our first adventure; a handyman we hired built the Taj Mahal of chicken coops out of beautiful reclaimed cedar siding. Not
sure the chickens need an 8 foot roof, but it makes human visits much more pleasant. We currently have two adult silver laced Wyandottes, one gold
laced Wyandotte, a buff orpington, three 10 week old Ameracaunas and a light brama. Sadly we lost two others while free-ranging them, both in one week.
Somebody must have come back for seconds - we get fox, bobcat, etc, around here.
My young daughter makes a tidy profit selling eggs to our neighbors, and we do love our chicken ladies. We are in the process of adapting the new ones to the
established flock, so if anyone has some thoughts about this issue I'd appreciated it - we have been housing them in the same coop but with divided quarters.
Just today we opened the divider between their scratch yards and there was a good deal of scolding and pecking. How much of this is normal and what should we be worried about?
