Newbie Chicken Mama here raising my first flock of 13! We live in an unincorporated spot in Southwest Washington state and are finally realizing our dream of raising laying chickens! It's been a bit surreal seeing how crazy the whole country is going for chickens right now, and trying to reassure anyone who asks that we aren't just following the trend. My husband and I have two young boys and are dedicated to keeping a sustainable, down to earth lifestyle amidst the chaos of current events. Our little world is motivated mostly by slow living, reverence for nature and time spent outside, and nourishing our bodies and environment.
The girls (
) are currently between 1.5-3 weeks old. We picked them up from our local Wilco/smaller feed stores over the course of a week starting on Feb 27th. So far the age gap of 6-7 days has worked out ok and they are a happy flock. 2 Easter Eggers, 2 Black Copper Marans, 2 Sapphire Splash, Buff Orp, Black Australorp, Buckeye, Dominique, Barred Rock, Delaware and a Golden Laced Polish. They're a sight to behold and they are feathering fast, trying to fly and working on straightening out the pecking order as we speak. I am so proud of them!
Beyond the chicks and my constant care and bonding with them I love to grow flowers and food, bake sourdough and support my local farm and garden programs. I spend time connecting with my community and friends (a lot of whom also have chickens!) and my kids spend a lot of time digging in the dirt and eating my bread. They are sweet kids and they are going to LOVE caring for our chickens and spending hours outside in the garden with them this summer.
The chicken math ALREADY GOT ME, and we are currently knocking out a wall of our coop and expanding it to provide double the interior square footage (8x6ft), and creating a large (8x16ft) predator proof covered run for their unsupervised outside time. They'll also have protected access under the coop. I have already taken SO MANY tips from this forum for building our chicken palace- THANK YOU! I am excited and grateful to have this incredible forum to come to with questions about this process and learn from all the experience you all have!
Happy to be here
